The Three Ways They Fail
Every one of them is visible months in advance, and every one is a small repair if you catch it. None of them is the middle of the bracelet.

Short answer
Tennis bracelets fail in three places: the clasp as its spring softens, the link beside the clasp which is flexed at every fastening, and a lost stone where prongs or beads have thinned. All three give warning. A monthly pull-and-twist test and a bench check every two years catch all of them.
A tennis bracelet is a chain of small mechanisms worn on the most mobile part of the body, swinging against desks and door handles all day. What is surprising is not that it fails but how predictable the failure is: three points, in the same order, every time.
1. The clasp softens
A box clasp holds by a sprung metal tongue compressed into a housing. Springs lose tension with use. That happens slowly, over years, and long before the clasp fails outright it starts releasing under a knock.
The warning: the clasp begins to give a fraction under pull before it holds. It still fastens, still clicks, still looks correct.
The test: fasten it, hold both sides of the closed clasp, pull firmly apart and twist โ over a table, never over a hard floor or a drain. A sound clasp does not move at all. Any movement is the warning.
The fix: re-tensioning or replacing the clasp. Small work. And this is why a figure-eight safety catch matters โ it is an independent latch with no shared spring, so it keeps the bracelet on your wrist during the months when the box clasp is tiring.
2. The link beside the clasp
This is the one almost nobody knows and it accounts for a large share of breaks.
Every time you fasten a bracelet one-handed, you pull and twist the joint immediately next to the clasp. Over thousands of fastenings that single link takes far more work cycles than any other link in the piece โ and metal that is flexed repeatedly work-hardens and eventually cracks.
The warning: that joint feels looser or floppier than the joints either side, or shows a fine bright line where the metal has been working.
The test: hold the two links either side of it and flex gently. Compare with a joint in the middle of the bracelet. They should feel identical.
The fix: replacing or reinforcing one link. Also small work โ if it is caught before the link parts and the bracelet comes off somewhere you were not looking.
3. A stone comes out
Prongs and beads do not snap. They thin, gradually, as metal wears away over years. A stone that falls out is the end of a long process, not an event.
The important consequence: a lost stone is never isolated. Its neighbours have had exactly the same years of wear, and on many settings the beads holding one stone are shared with the stone next to it. One gone usually means several nearby are thin.
The warning: under a 10ร loupe, a healthy prong tip is a rounded, clearly defined lip curling over the stone. A worn one looks flattened or squared, as though filed. That difference is visible years before a stone is at risk.
The fix: if you lose a stone, stop wearing the bracelet immediately and have the whole row checked rather than that single gap refilled. Refilling one gap in a weakened row buys a few months.

The last row is worth noting because it is not a failure at all. A bracelet long enough to slide over the hand comes off with the clasp still fastened, which is why people find them gone with nothing broken.

Two things we would rather say than sell around. First: never put a tennis bracelet in a home ultrasonic cleaner. They work by vibration, and vibration is precisely what dislodges a stone whose beads have already thinned. A bench uses one too โ but after checking the settings, not before. On a fifty-stone piece with no inspection, an ultrasonic is a machine for finding your weakest setting the hard way.
Second: most of the wear we see did not happen on a wrist. It happened in a jewellery box, where a bracelet lay against other pieces for years of small movements. Stones at Mohs 9 and above score gold at roughly 2.8 without effort. One soft pouch per piece removes that entire category of damage and costs almost nothing.
What does not fail
For balance: the stones themselves. Moissanite at Mohs 9.25 and lab grown diamond at 10 are both far above the quartz at Mohs 7 in ordinary household dust, so neither abrades in normal wear. When a stone in a tennis bracelet looks dull it is almost always film on the pavilion from hand cream and soap, which collects underneath where a cloth never reaches.
Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a five-minute soak, a soft brush worked from underneath, rinse in a bowl rather than over a drain. If it comes back bright it was dirt. If nothing changes, the surface has been abraded โ which points to a softer material than either of those two.
The maintenance routine, in full
- Monthly: pull-and-twist the fastened clasp over a table.
- Every few months: flex the link beside the clasp and compare with a middle joint.
- Every two years: a bench check โ prong tips, every setting, the clasp, the end connectors.
- As needed: soak and brush from underneath. Never toothpaste, never a home ultrasonic.
- Always: one pouch, on its own, and fasten it over a table.
- Immediately, if a stone goes: stop wearing it and have the whole row checked.
