Square Cushion Moissanite Solitaire on a Slim Band: A Buyerβs Guide
Four claws, one square cushion, a fine polished band. Why the slim band does so much for the stone, and the two numbers to ask for before you order.
Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 13 October 2026
Short answer: This is a pure solitaire: a square cushion moissanite in four claws on a slim basket head, above a plain polished band about 1.8 mm wide. It is made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, from 2 to 5 carats. The slim band makes the stone look fuller; ask for its thickness as well as its width.
Cushion cuts come in square and elongated outlines. This ring is made for the square cushion, where a soft-cornered stone sits almost as wide as the finger and a fine band underneath makes it look fuller still. It is a modern, minimal take on the solitaire β no halo, no pavΓ©, nothing competing with the stone. Our latest order was a 2 carat stone in sterling silver.
Why a slim band makes the stone look bigger
How large a stone looks is partly a ratio: the stone compared with what surrounds it. A thin band leaves more bare finger either side of the head, so the stone stands out more. It is one of the few design choices that makes a ring look larger, lighter on the hand and less costly all at once, because it uses less gold.
Width and thickness are different numbers
| Measurement | What it is | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Seen from above, across the band | How delicate the ring looks |
| Thickness | From inside to outside of the band | How well it stays round and lasts |
This band is about 1.8 mm wide. For a ring worn every day, the thickness at the base should be at least 1.8 mm too. A band can look slim from above and still be sturdy, as long as it has enough depth. Ask for the thickness on the CAD preview.
Crushed ice or chunky?
Cushions are cut two ways. A βcrushed iceβ cushion has many small facets and a fine, glittery look. A βchunkyβ cushion has fewer, larger facets and bolder flashes. In moissanite, whose dispersion (0.104) is more than twice diamondβs, chunky facets gather the coloured fire into fewer, larger flashes, while crushed ice spreads it into a constant shimmer. Ask which style your stone is, and see it on video.
From the workshop
Product photographs of rings are taken with macro lenses, up close and under strong light. They make every ring look larger and brighter than it reads on a hand at normal distance β that is true of our photos and everyone elseβs. The honest way to judge size is a paper square. Ask for your stoneβs millimetres, cut a square that size, and hold it on your finger at armβs length. Our latest customer chose the 2 carat in sterling silver, which on most fingers already reads clearly as a statement stone on this slim band. A ring correctly looks a little smaller and calmer in person than in a macro photograph; the paper test removes that surprise.
Before you order: a short checklist
- Ask for the stoneβs millimetres and do the paper test.
- Ask whether the cushion is crushed ice or chunky.
- Ask for the band thickness at the base: 1.8 mm or more.
- Choose 14K gold for daily wear; silver for trying the design.
- Enjoy the easy part: a plain solitaire takes a straight wedding band flush.

Frequently asked questions
Does a thin band make the stone look bigger?
Yes. A slim band leaves more bare finger beside the head, so the stone stands out more by comparison.
Is a slim band strong enough for everyday wear?
Yes, if it is thick enough. Width can be slim; ask for at least 1.8 mm of thickness at the base of the band.
What is a crushed ice cushion?
A cushion cut with many small facets that gives a fine, glittery look. A chunky cushion has fewer, larger facets and bolder flashes.
Why does the ring look smaller in person than in photos?
Jewellery photographs are taken up close with macro lenses and strong light. A paper square at the stoneβs millimetres shows the true size on your hand.
Will a straight wedding band sit flush with this ring?
Generally yes. A plain solitaire is the style most likely to take a straight band flush; confirm it on the CAD side view.
