Elongated Cushion Moissanite Three Stone Ring with Pear Sides: A Buyerβs Guide
A soft rectangle between two points. Why a three stone ring is judged by how well its stones match, and the two practical questions this design raises.
Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 13 October 2026
Short answer: This ring sets an elongated cushion moissanite in four claws with a pear moissanite on each shoulder, points turned outward and set tight to the centre. It has a band about 1.9 mm wide and is made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, from 2 to 5 carats. Ask for the side stones to be matched to the centre, and plan the wedding band now.
Three stone rings usually put round or tapered stones beside the centre. This one uses pears, turned point outward, so the head widens through the soft cushion and then finishes in two sharp tips. It is a shape that reads clearly from across a room. Our latest order was in sterling silver with a 2 carat centre.
Matching matters more than grades
A single stone is judged alone. A three stone ring puts stones side by side β the one situation where most people actually notice differences in colour and brightness. In a three stone ring, three well-matched stones look better than one exceptional centre with two mismatched sides.
Moissanite makes this a practical question rather than a paperwork one. No laboratory grades moissanite colour or clarity, so matching is done by eye. Ask that the pears be chosen against the centre stone under the same light, and look at a video of the three together before setting.
Elongated cushion: crushed ice or chunky?
Cushions are cut in two broad styles. A βcrushed iceβ cushion has many small facets and a fine, glittery look; a βchunkyβ cushion has fewer, larger facets and bolder flashes. In moissanite, chunkier facets separate the coloured fire into fewer, larger flashes, while crushed ice gives a constant shimmer. Neither is better β ask which style the stone is, and look at it on video.
| Three stone style | Look | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Round sides | Soft, traditional | Colour match |
| Tapered baguette sides | Calm, Art Deco | Even step facets |
| Pear sides, points in | Hugging the centre | Fit against the centre |
| Pear sides, points out (this ring) | Wide, dramatic outline | V-claws on each outer point |
Protecting the outer points
Turning the pears outward puts their thinnest part at the very edge of the ring, where knocks land. Moissanite is Mohs 9.25 and has no cleavage, so it is tough, but each outward tip should sit in a V-shaped claw that wraps it. Confirm this on the CAD preview.
From the workshop
Three stone rings almost never take a straight wedding band flush. The head is wider than the band, and the side stones usually sit at the same height as the shoulders, so a straight band leaves a visible gap or rubs against the pears. If you plan to wear a wedding band, decide now: a gently curved contour band, a thin plain spacer, or simply a band worn with a small gap. Ordering the band with the ring lets it be fitted to this head in the same production run β far easier than trying to fit one afterwards.
Before you order: a short checklist
- Ask for the side pears to be matched to the centre by eye, and see them together on video.
- Ask whether the cushion is crushed ice or chunky.
- Confirm V-claws on both outward pear points.
- Decide on your wedding band now and consider ordering it with the ring.
- Choose 14K gold for daily wear; silver for trying the design.

Frequently asked questions
What is an elongated cushion cut?
A cushion cut that is longer than it is wide, giving a soft rectangle with rounded corners and brilliant facets.
Why do the pears point outward?
It makes the head widen and then finish in two points, a bolder outline than pears turned in towards the centre. Each outward point needs a V-claw.
How are the stones in a moissanite three stone ring matched?
By eye, under the same light, because moissanite is not laboratory graded. Ask to see the three stones together on video before setting.
Will a straight wedding band fit next to a three stone ring?
Usually not flush. A contour band or a thin spacer works better; ordering the band with the ring lets it be fitted to the head.
How wide is the band?
About 1.9 mm. For daily wear, also ask for its thickness at the base, ideally 1.8 mm or more.
