American engagement season

Ten Weeks, Four Dates

The United States does not propose evenly across the year. It proposes between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, and that compression decides when a made-to-order ring has to be started.

Short answer

American engagement season runs from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day โ€” roughly ten weeks in which industry surveys consistently place around a third to two-fifths of all US proposals. Four dates carry most of it: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and Valentine's Day. For the 2026 season, a made-to-order ring for Christmas Eve should be ordered by the first week of December.

Ask an American jeweler when their year happens and they will not say June. They will say the eight weeks between the last Thursday in November and the second week of February, and they will say it slightly through their teeth, because it is when everything arrives at once.

The clustering is real and it is specific to the United States. Year after year, The Knot's real-weddings research and similar industry surveys put somewhere between a third and two-fifths of American proposals inside this window, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the single densest pair of days on the calendar. That is not a marketing invention. It is what happens when a culture puts its two largest family gatherings and its designated romantic holiday within eleven weeks of each other.

Why the cluster exists

Three structural reasons, none of them about romance.

Both families are already in one room. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two occasions in the American year when extended family reliably travels to be together. A proposal that wants witnesses, or a parent's blessing, or a photograph with everyone in it, is nearly free to stage in that window and expensive to stage in April.

The calendar hands out permission. New Year's Eve supplies a natural threshold and Valentine's Day supplies an unambiguous reason. Neither needs explaining to anyone.

Money lands in Q4. Annual bonuses, holiday pay periods and, for a large slice of the country, the run-up to tax-refund season in February all fall around the same weeks. The season sits where the money does.

The 2026 season, with order-by dates

These are worked from our own production reality rather than a generic estimate: about seven to eight days on the bench for a made-to-order ring, then ten to twelve days in standard transit from Surat to a US address, or six to eight expedited. We have then held back three days of buffer before the occasion itself, because a ring that arrives on the morning of is not a ring you can relax about.

Occasion Date In hand by Order by โ€” standard Order by โ€” expedited
Thanksgiving Thu 26 Nov 2026 23 Nov 3 Nov 8 Nov
Christmas Eve / Day Thu 24 โ€“ Fri 25 Dec 2026 21 Dec 1 Dec 6 Dec
New Year's Eve Thu 31 Dec 2026 28 Dec 8 Dec 13 Dec
Valentine's Day Sun 14 Feb 2027 11 Feb 22 Jan 27 Jan

One adjustment that did not apply two years ago. Since the $800 de minimis exemption ended, every parcel entering the United States is a formal import and clears customs rather than passing through. Clearance is usually a day or two and occasionally a week. If the date is fixed and the proposal depends on it, add a week to every figure in that table and order in the earlier column.

What the compression actually does to buyers

The season is not just busy; it changes the decisions people make inside it. Three patterns we see every year.

  • Ring size gets guessed. There is no time left to find out properly, so the order goes in at a 6 or a 7 and a resize is booked mentally for January. This is the single most common avoidable cost of the season.
  • Stock beats specification. A buyer who would have chosen a particular shank thickness in July takes what can ship in December. Worth knowing about yourself before you are in it.
  • The second ring appears. Placeholder proposals โ€” propose now, design together in January โ€” are far more common in this window than anywhere else in the year, and they are a legitimate answer to the deadline rather than a failure.

From our bench in Surat

Our own order book maps onto that American calendar almost exactly, and the shape of it is a wall rather than a curve. The last ten days of November and the first ten of December are the densest of our year, and the bench does not get faster because the queue is longer.

So the honest version: we do not offer a guaranteed-by-date service in December, and we would rather say that in September than in a rushed email on the 12th. What we will do is give you a written production start date when the order is placed, and tell you plainly if the date you want is no longer realistic. A workshop that says yes to every December deadline is a workshop that is going to disappoint someone in the third week.

What to do before November

  1. Get the ring size properly, now, while there is no deadline making it awkward.
  2. Pick the occasion first and work backwards from the table above โ€” the date decides the budget more than the budget decides the date.
  3. Decide whether you are proposing with the final ring or a placeholder, and be at peace with either.
  4. Ask any seller for production time and transit time as two separate numbers, not one combined estimate.
  5. Confirm in writing who is responsible for import duty and whether the quoted price includes it.
  6. If it is a surprise, sort out where the parcel is delivered before you order, not after.

Frequently asked questions

When is engagement season in the United States?

It runs from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day โ€” late November to mid-February, about ten weeks. Industry surveys consistently place roughly a third to two-fifths of American proposals inside that window, concentrated on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day.

What is the most popular day to propose in America?

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together are the densest pair on the US calendar, with Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve close behind. The common factor is not the holiday itself but that extended family is already gathered and travelling.

When should I order a ring for a Christmas 2026 proposal?

By 1 December on standard shipping, or 6 December expedited, to have it in hand by 21 December. That assumes seven to eight days on the bench plus ten to twelve days transit and a three-day buffer. Because every US parcel now clears customs formally, add a week if the date cannot move.

Are engagement rings more expensive during engagement season?

The metal and stone prices are not seasonal, but availability is. What rises in November and December is the cost of speed โ€” expedited shipping, rush production surcharges where they are offered, and the compromises made when a preferred specification cannot be produced in time.

Is it a bad idea to propose with a placeholder ring?

No, and it is far more common in the American December than at any other point in the year. It solves both of the season's real problems at once: an unknown ring size and a fixed date. The design conversation then happens in January without a deadline attached to it.

Everything is made to order in Surat. Beginning in September means the specification is a choice rather than whatever the calendar allows.
