Grouping three small stones into a triangle is an old way of manufacturing apparent size. At any distance beyond arm's length the eye stops resolving the individual stones and merges the group into a single bright patch roughly the width of the triangle, which is considerably wider than any one of the accents. That is why three stones of half a point each will read larger than a single accent of one and a half points, even though the weight is identical. The arrangement only works if the triangle is close to equilateral. Set the three at unequal spacing and the eye resolves them again, at which point the cluster stops reading as one shape and starts looking like a setting error. Scattering the clusters along the band with plain gold between them then borrows the same logic at a larger scale: several bright patches separated by mirror finish metal, rather than one continuous line that greys out at distance.

The shank is fine and rounded, with the clusters sitting low against the surface and the lower half left plain. Because the accents are grouped rather than continuous, the band uses far fewer stones than a pave shank of the same visual weight.
