The princess is the square brilliant, and it exists because of an efficiency in cutting. A square outline retains far more of the original rough crystal than a round does, so for the same weight of rough you get a larger finished stone. Its corners are the vulnerable part, which is why they are protected here by claws shaped to wrap each one. The hidden halo lifts the stone and adds brightness at its base. A princess cut concentrates colour toward its corners more than a round does, so a white metal is the safer choice if you want the stone to read completely icy. Yellow and rose gold emphasise the square outline against the finger. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and gives the corner claws more resistance to knocks.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a princess cut look bigger for its carat weight?
A square outline wastes far less of the original rough crystal during cutting than a round does, so more of the weight ends up in the finished stone and less is lost. The result is a larger looking stone at the same carat weight and usually a lower price than a round.

Are the corners fragile?
The corners are the thinnest points on any princess cut, which is why every claw on this ring is shaped to wrap around a corner rather than just sit on top of it. Set properly they are perfectly durable for daily wear.

What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small diamonds around the base of the centre stone, facing outward instead of upward. From above you see the square outline alone. From the side it shows as a bright collar under the stone.

Does a princess cut sparkle like a round?
Close to it. A princess is a brilliant cut, meaning it is faceted for maximum light return like a round, just arranged in a square outline. It gives crisp bright sparkle rather than the broad flashes of a step cut.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. Same carbon structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.

How long does it take to make?
