A princess cut lab grown diamond turned on the diagonal and held in a half bezel, on a slim plain band. Two unusual decisions sit behind this ring. First, the square stone is rotated so a corner points up the finger rather than sitting square to the band, which turns a familiar shape into a kite and makes the ring read as far more modern than a conventional princess setting. Second, instead of claws at each corner, two broad walls of metal wrap the upper left and lower right edges and the remaining two edges are left completely open. That is a half bezel. It protects the corners, which are the part of a princess most likely to chip, while leaving the stone visible and open to light along the other two sides. Free IGI certificate for the centre stone. Band details

A slim round band with a high polish, unbroken all the way around and set with no stones. The half bezel rises directly from the shank with no gallery beneath, so the stone sits low against the finger. Nothing else is added.

Yellow gold, as photographed, makes the two bezel walls read as deliberate blocks of colour against a colourless stone. White gold and sterling silver let the metal recede so the diagonal shape dominates. Rose gold is the warmest option.

Frequently asked questions

What does set on the diagonal mean?
The square stone is rotated forty five degrees so a corner points along the finger instead of an edge sitting parallel to the band. The outline becomes a kite or diamond shape rather than a square, which is a much less common look.

What is a half bezel?
A bezel is a wall of metal wrapped around the stone. A half bezel wraps only two opposite sides and leaves the other two open, so the stone is protected where it matters but still open to light and visible from the side.

Why does a princess cut need corner protection?
A princess has four sharp ninety degree corners, and those are the most vulnerable points on the stone. Covering two of them in solid metal and setting the ring low is a genuinely safer arrangement than four thin claws.

Does a bezel make the diamond look smaller?
A full bezel can. A half bezel does not, because two full edges of the stone are left completely uncovered, so you see the whole width along one axis.

Is this a good ring for daily wear?
