Two ways of handling light

The pear is a brilliant cut, packed with small facets that scatter light into fine, lively sparkle. The emerald is a step cut, with long parallel facets that return broad, calm flashes, the effect known as the hall of mirrors. Put them side by side and you see both kinds of diamond light at once, which is something no single stone can offer.

The outlines play off each other too. The pear's curve and point lean toward the emerald's straight side, so the two stones look as if they are turned toward each other, which is exactly the sentiment the toi et moi was invented to express.

Setting the pair

The pear sits in claws with a V shaped claw guarding its point. The emerald cut, with cropped corners, is naturally sturdy and sits in its own claws alongside. We match the two by face up size and table appearance rather than weight alone, because a step cut looks smaller than a brilliant of the same carat.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold suits the vintage character of the design, white metal gives it a modern edge, and rose gold softens the contrast between the two cuts. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

IGI certification

The principal pear diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The emerald cut is matched to the same E VVS2 grade in our workshop.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. We choose the two stones together, build the head around their outlines and set them by hand for your chosen total carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush between and underneath the two stones. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? Both stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Why does the emerald cut look smaller at the same weight? Step cuts carry more weight in depth, so we balance the pair by visible size rather than by carat alone.

How is the carat weight split? The option is the total across both stones.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A curved or contour band usually sits best.
