This is a cluster halo, not a pave halo

The difference is the single most important thing to understand about this ring, because the two look nothing alike in person even though both are called halos.

A pave halo uses very small stones packed shoulder to shoulder in a shared bead setting. It reads as a thin bright outline around the centre, and its job is to make the centre look bigger.

This is the older kind. Each accent is a substantial round stone with its own individual claws, and there is visible metal between one stone and the next. The stones sit slightly proud and tilt outward, which is what produces the sunburst effect, and the claws themselves become part of the pattern rather than something to hide.

The result does not look like a bigger pear. It looks like a flower, or an antique cluster brooch, which is exactly what this style descended from. Victorian and mid century cluster rings were built this way, and if you have seen an old family ring with a coloured centre and a ring of claw set stones around it, this is that construction.

What that means for you

It is bolder than a pave halo and it covers more of the finger, so it wears larger than the centre carat weight alone suggests.

It is also more durable in one specific way. Individual claw settings hold larger stones more securely than shared pave beads, and if one accent ever needed attention a jeweller can work on it without disturbing its neighbours.

It is less durable in another. The claws sit exposed around the outside of the ring, so they catch on wool and hair more than a smooth pave halo does. That is the honest trade off with this style, and it is why we finish every claw round rather than pointed.

How this compares with our other pear halos

Our Hidden Halo rings put a ring of small stones under the setting where only you see it, and change nothing about how the ring looks from above.

This ring is the only one with a regular, evenly spaced ring of large individually claw set rounds. It is the most traditional and the most obviously vintage of the group.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The halo accents are round moissanite, and they are considerably larger than the stones we use in pave. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. Matching matters here more than in a pave design, because each accent is large enough to be looked at individually.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the halo scaled so the proportion between centre and accents stays the same.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which is the historically correct choice and the one that makes the claws read as part of the flower rather than as fittings. In white gold or silver the metal between the accents nearly disappears and the halo becomes one continuous bright ring, closer to a modern look. Rose gold is warm and unusual. 10K is the hardest gold and holds a large number of individual claw settings best, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest, and on a ring with this many exposed claws we would gently suggest 14K over 18K. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set the centre, set each halo accent individually in its own claws, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations. Setting a claw cluster takes considerably longer than setting a pave halo of the same diameter.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush worked between the accents and underneath the halo, where the openings collect hand cream. This design actually cleans more easily than a pave halo because the brush can reach right round each stone. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? No, and we would rather say so plainly. The halo is wide and sits proud of the shank, so a straight band leaves a visible gap. A contoured band shaped to the curve of the halo is the right answer, or wear this one alone, which many people do because it is already a substantial ring.

Can it be resized? Yes, easily. The shank is completely plain, which is the best case for resizing.

Will the claws catch on clothing? Occasionally, more than on a pave halo. We round every claw tip to reduce it, but this is a raised design and it is not the ring for someone who wears a lot of fine knitwear.

Does it make the centre look bigger? It makes the whole ring look bigger, which is not quite the same thing. The pear stays clearly visible as its own shape rather than merging into the halo, which some people prefer and others do not.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw, and the halo stones around the point give it further protection.
