Pear Cut Moissanite Split Shank Vine Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite in six claws on a band that genuinely divides. Below each shoulder the shank splits into two branches that arc apart, leave an open oval between them, and rejoin at the head. One branch is left plain and polished, the other is micropave set, and where the two meet the setting there is a marquise cut accent laid in like a leaf on a stem.

A split shank that is actually split

Many rings described as split shank are a single band with a groove cut down the middle. This one is not. The two branches are separate through their whole length, and you can see daylight through the openings on each shoulder, which is what gives the ring its lightness despite covering a good deal of finger.

Making one branch plain and the other set is the detail that turns it from geometry into something botanical. The pave branch reads as the flowering stem and the polished branch as the bare one, and because they cross at different heights the two do not compete.

The marquise accents sit at the junction where the branches meet the head, angled outward like leaves growing from the point where a stem divides. There is one on each side and they are the largest accents on the ring.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The accents are marquise and round moissanite. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting so the pave branch does not read warmer or greyer than the centre.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the accents scaled to match.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the plain branch reads as warm metal against the white pave of the other, which is exactly the contrast the design is built on. In white metal the two branches read more alike and the effect is quieter. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush through the open loops from both sides, because that is where soap and hand cream collect on any split shank, and a clogged opening is the one thing that spoils this design. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not entirely. A split shank has a shaped outline and the branches sit at slightly different heights, so a straight band will meet it unevenly. A contoured band solves it, and many people wear this design alone.

Can it be resized? Within a narrow range. Both the pave and the split construction limit how far the shank can be worked, so please get the size right and write to us if you are unsure.

Is a split shank weaker than a solid band? No. Two branches sharing the load is a sound structure, and the total metal is comparable to a wider single band. It is more vulnerable to being bent out of shape by a hard knock though, simply because there is more shape to lose.

Are the marquise points protected? Yes, each marquise has a claw over both of its points.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
