A pear cut moissanite in six claws with a row of round accents along each shoulder, each pair sharing a single V shaped prong between them so a small point of metal shows between every stone, and a hidden halo of small accents wrapped around the underside of the setting.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Shared prong, not micropave

Look closely at the shoulders and you will see a small pointed piece of metal between every accent. That is a shared prong, and it is a genuinely different setting method from the micropave we use on our finer bands.

In micropave the stones sit shoulder to shoulder held by tiny beads raised from the surface, and the effect is a solid strip of light with almost no metal showing.

In shared prong each stone is gripped between two proper prongs, and one prong does duty for the two stones on either side of it. The stones can therefore be larger and set slightly higher, with light entering them from the sides as well as the top. What you get is a row of distinct bright points rather than a continuous glitter, and each of those points fires harder than a micropave stone does.

It is also a stronger setting. Prongs are more substantial than pave beads, and larger stones in prongs are less likely to be knocked loose than very small stones in beads.

The hidden halo

Underneath the pear, wrapped around the outside of the basket, sits a ring of small accents set facing outwards. From directly above you cannot see them. From the side, and every time you turn your hand, they light the space under the stone and lift it visually off the finger.

We should be plain about what it does and does not do. It does not make the stone look bigger from above. It removes the plain metal a side view would otherwise show and gives the setting a lit, floating look in profile.

How this compares with our other pear rings

Our Shared Prong Pave ring uses the same shoulder setting but leaves the basket bare, with no hidden halo. Cleaner in profile, and less expensive.

Our Slim Pave Hidden Halo ring has the same hidden halo but uses fine micropave on a much narrower band. Softer, more delicate, less individual sparkle.

Our Plain Band Hidden Halo ring has the halo and nothing else on the shank at all.

This ring is the only one that combines shared prong shoulders with a hidden halo. It is the brightest of the three from above and the most substantial to wear.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The shoulder accents and the hidden halo are round moissanite. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. Matching matters more in a shared prong band than in micropave, because each accent is large enough to be looked at on its own.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the shoulder accents scaled to stay in proportion.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the small prongs between the stones read clearly and the row has visible rhythm. In white gold or silver the prongs disappear and the shoulders read closer to a continuous line of light, which is a brighter but less structured effect. Rose gold sits between. 10K is the hardest gold and holds prong settings best, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set the shoulders in shared prongs, set the hidden halo, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Give particular attention to the underside of the head, because a hidden halo sits exactly where hand cream and soap collect and it stops sparkling long before the top of the ring does. The shoulders are easier to clean than micropave, because the brush reaches between the stones. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably. The shared prongs sit slightly proud of the shank so a flat band touches the prong tips rather than smooth metal. The lower half of the shank is plain, so wearing the band below the ring avoids it entirely.

Can it be resized? Yes, within a good range. The lower shank has no stones.

Do the prongs catch? Less than you would expect. They are small and we round every tip, but they are more present than the smooth surface of a micropave band.

Do the accents fall out? Shared prong is a robust setting, generally more secure for stones of this size than pave beads. Have any set ring checked every couple of years.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
