Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%A pear cut moissanite in six claws, a fine line of scalloped pave running three quarters of the way round a slim band, and a hidden halo of small stones tucked under the head where only you will see it from above. It is the combination most people are actually looking for when they say they want a classic engagement ring with a little more than a plain one.
We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring checked by hand on the bench before it is packed.
On a scalloped pave band the metal between each stone is cut away into a curve, so each stone sits in its own little arch rather than in a straight wall of metal. That does two things. Less metal touches each stone, so more of it is exposed and more light gets in from the side. And the curved edges catch light themselves, which is why a scalloped band looks brighter than a plain pave band with the same number of stones.
The pave runs about three quarters of the way round and stops before it reaches the palm. That is deliberate. Stones set under the finger take the most knocks, wear fastest and are the ones that come loose, so leaving that section as plain polished metal makes the ring both cheaper and more durable. It also makes it possible to resize the ring later, which a fully set eternity style shank does not allow.
Look at the ring from directly above and you see a solitaire. Look at it from the side and a row of tiny round moissanite appears around the base of the setting, sitting beneath the centre stone. It lifts the head, throws a little extra light up into the pavilion of the pear and gives the profile a finished look instead of a bare basket.
Nobody across a table will notice it. You will, every time you look at your hand from the side, and so will anyone sitting next to you. That is the whole appeal of a hidden halo, and if you would rather have the money in the centre stone we also list this design without one.
Our Hidden Halo Slim Solitaire has the same hidden halo but a completely plain band with no pave at all. Cheaper, quieter, and a good choice if you want the secret detail without any sparkle on the shank.
Our Scalloped Milgrain Graduated Pave ring has pave that starts larger at the shoulders and tapers as it goes, with milgrain beading along the edges, and no hidden halo. More decorative on the band, plainer under the head.
This ring has both features and no milgrain. Even pave, clean edges, hidden halo. If you want the most conventional version of the modern pear engagement ring, this is it, and we say that as a description rather than a criticism. It is popular because it works.
The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire rather than the broad mirror flashes of a step cut. The point runs up the finger and elongates it.
The pave and the hidden halo stones are small rounds. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and we match the accents to the centre before setting so the band does not read warmer or greyer than the stone above it.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond among stones you would wear daily.
Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The slim band flatters every size, and at 4 and 5 carat the contrast between the large stone and the fine band is part of the effect.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, which is the most common choice for this design because the white metal disappears behind the stones. Silver gives a similar bright effect for considerably less. 10K is the hardest gold and most scratch resistant, 14K the balance most buyers pick for everyday wear, 18K the richest in colour and the softest. White gold is rhodium plated and will need replating every one to two years.
Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.
Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Pay attention to two places: between the scallops on the band, and underneath the head where the hidden halo sits. Both collect soap and skin oil, and a clogged pave ring looks grey rather than white. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.
Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, better than on most designs. The pave stops before the bottom of the shank and the hidden halo sits above the band line, so a flat or slightly curved band sits close.
Can it be resized? Yes, within reason, because the bottom quarter of the shank has no stones in it. That is one of the practical advantages of three quarter coverage over a fully set band.
Do small pave stones fall out? Properly set pave does not, but it is more vulnerable to knocks than a plain band. Have the settings checked every couple of years, particularly if you wear the ring daily.
Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw. The point is the vulnerable part of any pear shaped stone, so we give it extra metal coverage.
Does the hidden halo make it look bigger? A little, because the head is wider at the base, but not the way a visible halo does. If maximum finger coverage is your goal, a visible halo design will do more for the money.
