A pear cut moissanite in six claws with a small group of accent stones gathered on each shoulder, and nothing else. Each cluster is made of two little rounds, one marquise laid along the band with its points running down the finger, and a final tiny round beyond it. The stones stop within a few millimetres of the centre and the rest of the band is left completely plain and polished.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished by hand.

A cluster that stays small on purpose

Cluster shoulders can be done two ways. You can pack the shoulders solid with stones so the ring reads as one continuous mass of light, or you can place a handful of small stones with space around them so each one reads separately. This is the second kind.

The effect is that the pear stays unmistakably the subject of the ring. The accents give the eye a little movement on the way in and then get out of the way. Because the cluster is compact and the band beyond it is bare, the ring also stays light on the finger and easy to wear with other rings.

Mixing marquise and round is what stops it looking like a row of pave. The marquise is elongated and points along the band, echoing the shape of the pear above it, while the rounds are compact and break the line up. It is a small detail that does a lot of work.

How this compares with our other pear cluster rings

Our Marquise and Round Scattered Cluster ring uses the same two stone shapes but many more of them, in larger sizes, packed across the whole shoulder in two dense wings. That is a statement ring where the accents nearly rival the centre.

This one is its quiet counterpart. Roughly four small stones per side rather than eight larger ones, with clear polished metal between them and beyond them. It costs considerably less and it suits someone who wants a solitaire with a whisper of decoration rather than a cluster ring.

Please look at both top photographs side by side. The difference in density is obvious once you see them together and it is the whole reason we list them separately.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire rather than the broad mirror flashes of a step cut, and its point elongates the finger.

The accents are marquise and round moissanite. Every stone in the ring, centre and accents alike, is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. We match the accents to the centre before setting, which matters more on a design like this than on a pave ring, because with so few stones and so much space around them any mismatch in colour would be obvious.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The accents scale with the centre, so the proportion between them stays the same at every size.

The band

A slim rounded shank, plain and polished from the end of the cluster all the way round. Because there are no stones in the lower part of the band it can be resized readily, and a wedding band sits close against it without fighting for space.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm metal between the accents is part of the design rather than just background. Silver gives a bright white finish for much less. 10K is the hardest gold and most scratch resistant, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The clusters have small gaps around each stone that collect hand cream, so give them a gentle brush rather than just a wipe. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and even below the clusters, so a flat band sits close.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably, because the lower half of the shank carries no stones.

Are the marquise accents fragile? Marquise stones have two points, which are the vulnerable part of the shape, so we set each one with a claw over both points. They are small and sit low against the band, which also protects them.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own dedicated claw.

Does it look like a plain solitaire from a distance? Nearly, yes, and for some buyers that is exactly the appeal. If you want the accents to be visible across a room, choose the fuller cluster version instead.
