This is the most worked ring in our pear collection. A pear cut moissanite sits at the centre inside a full wreath of marquise cut accents that fan outward like petals, with small rounds filling the spaces between them. Below that the shank splits into two pave set ribbons that cross over and under each other the whole way round the finger, with marquise accents set inside the openings the braid creates. Look at the inside face of the shoulders and you will find openwork scrollwork, cut and pierced so light passes through the metal itself.

We make it to order in our own workshop in Surat, India. This design takes a bench jeweller considerably longer than a solitaire because of the number of stones and the piercing work, and every one is finished and checked by hand by our family before it is packed.

What you are actually looking at

Three separate pieces of work sit in this ring, and they are worth separating out.

The wreath. The marquise accents around the centre are set at angles so their points radiate outward, which is what gives the head its flower shape rather than the plain circle of a conventional halo. Small rounds sit between the marquise points so there is no dead metal between them. From above the wreath makes the centre stone read considerably larger than it is, which is the practical reason people choose halos in the first place.

The braid. The shank is not one band with a groove in it. It is two ribbons of metal, both micropave set along their length, which genuinely cross over and under one another around the finger. Where the two ribbons open apart they leave elongated gaps, and a marquise accent sits inside each of those gaps facing along the finger.

The scrollwork. On the inner faces of the shoulders, under the head, the metal is pierced into open scrolls. Almost nobody will see it. It is there because a ring made properly is finished on the parts that do not show, and because it lightens the piece without weakening it.

How this compares with our other detailed pear rings

Our Infinity Crossover Shank ring also has a crossing band, but its shoulders are plain crossing bars with marquise petals only at the head. This one carries pave and marquise accents the whole way round the shank, which is why it costs more.

Our Twisting Milgrain Vine ring is a nature design with milgrain edges and asymmetric leaves. That one is quieter and organic. This one is symmetrical, dense and formal.

If you want one line to tell them apart, this is the one where the sparkle continues all the way around the finger rather than stopping at the shoulders.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. Pear is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire rather than the broad mirror flashes of a step cut. On a ring this busy the pear centre still holds the eye because it is much larger than everything around it and because its point gives the design a direction.

Every stone in the ring, centre and accents alike, is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. We match the accents to the centre before setting so the wreath does not read warmer or greyer than the stone it surrounds. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is what makes it fire so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

You choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The wreath and the shank accents are scaled with it so the proportions stay right at every size.

Pricing note

The braided shank measures about 3 mm across at its widest, wider than the 2 mm our standard pricing covers, so this design carries a band width surcharge of 50 US dollars in sterling silver and 200 US dollars in gold. That surcharge is already included in the prices shown, and it reflects both the extra metal and the extra setting time the double ribbon requires.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown here in white gold, which suits the design because the white metal disappears behind the stones and leaves you looking at light rather than at framework. Silver gives a similar bright effect for much less. 10K is the hardest gold and the most scratch resistant. 14K is the balance most buyers choose. 18K has the richest colour and is the softest. White gold is rhodium plated and will need replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set, pierce, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after you order. That is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

This ring needs more cleaning attention than a plain one, and we would rather say so. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked gently into the wreath and along both ribbons of the braid. The gaps in a braided shank collect hand cream and soap faster than a solid band does, and a pave ring that has not been cleaned in six months looks grey rather than white. Rinse well, dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Not flush, no. The braided shank has a shaped outline, so a straight band will leave small gaps at the shoulders. A contoured or curved band will sit much better, or many people wear this one on its own.

Can it be resized later? Only within a very narrow range. A shank that is set with stones the whole way round cannot be cut and stretched like a plain band. Please get the size right the first time and write to us if you are unsure.

Do the small stones fall out? Properly set pave does not, but it is more vulnerable to knocks than a solitaire. Take it off before anything heavy handed and have the settings checked every couple of years.

Does it look smaller than 2 carat because of all the detail? The opposite. The wreath makes the head read noticeably larger than the centre stone alone, so even the 2 carat option covers a good amount of finger.

Is the scrollwork on both shoulders? Yes, both sides, pierced the same way.
