Pear Cut Moissanite Marquise Petal Fan Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite in six ball tipped claws with a small fan of marquise accents opening outward on each side, like petals unfolding from the stone, and a single round accent closing each fan. The stones sit tight against the centre and stop there. Everything beyond them is plain polished band.

What makes the fan work

Three marquise accents on each side are set at different angles rather than in a straight line. The one nearest the centre lies almost flat along the band, the next tilts up, and the outermost points away from the finger. That progression is what makes the group read as a petal spray rather than as a row of stones.

Marquise is the right shape for it. Its two points give each stone a direction, so a fan of marquise has movement in a way a fan of rounds never does. The single round at the end of each fan acts as a full stop, closing the group cleanly so it does not simply trail off into the band.

The claws on the centre stone are ball tipped rather than pointed, which is a small choice with a visible result. Round bead claws echo the round accent at the end of each fan and keep the whole head soft rather than spiky.

How this compares with our other pear cluster rings

We list two other rings with mixed accents on the shoulders and it is worth being specific about the difference, because from a thumbnail they look related.

Our Petite Marquise and Round Cluster ring lays its accents roughly along the line of the band, two small rounds and one marquise per side, spaced with metal between them. It reads linear and scattered.

Our Marquise and Round Scattered Cluster ring is much denser, with roughly eight larger stones packed across each shoulder in two solid wings. It reads as a statement cluster.

This one is the floral version. Three marquise per side, angled into a fan, gathered hard against the centre stone rather than spread along the band. It is the only one of the three where the accents form a shape rather than a line.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger. Because the fans sit so close to it, the centre and the accents read as one flower shape from above rather than as a stone with decoration beside it.

The accents are marquise and round moissanite. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the fans scaled to the centre.

The band

A slim rounded shank, completely plain from the end of each fan around to the palm. Keeping the band bare is what lets the fans read as a single ornament at the top of the ring. It also means the shank can be resized readily and a wedding band sits close.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm metal between the marquise petals is part of the flower shape. Rose gold gives the design a softer, more romantic reading. Silver and white gold make the fans read as pure white shapes with the metal almost disappearing. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The angled marquise create small pockets underneath where hand cream collects, so brush gently into the fan rather than just wiping the top. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Are the marquise points fragile? The points are the vulnerable part of a marquise, so each accent has a claw over both of its points. They are small and sit close to the band, which protects them further, but this is still a ring to take off before anything rough.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, mostly. The band is plain and even below the fans. The outermost marquise on each side tilts up slightly, so a straight band may sit a fraction away at the very top of the shoulder.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably. The lower shank carries no stones.

Does it look like a halo? Not really. A halo surrounds the stone completely. Here the accents gather at the two sides only, so from above the top and bottom of the pear are still open against plain metal.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
