A pear cut moissanite between two kite cut side stones. A kite is a four sided stone, wider across the middle and tapering to a point at each end, and here each one is set with its long axis running outward along the finger. The band is slim, plain and tapered, so there is nothing else on the ring but the three stones.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Why a kite rather than a pear or a marquise

Most three stone rings use rounds, pears or trapezoids at the sides. A kite is less common and it does something none of those do: it has straight edges and defined corners, so it reads as a geometric shape rather than an organic one.

Set against a pear centre, which is all curves, that contrast is the whole point of the design. The soft rounded belly of the pear sits between two crisp angular forms, and each makes the other more noticeable. A pear flanked by two smaller pears looks harmonious. A pear flanked by two kites looks deliberate.

The kites also sit almost flat against the finger, so despite being reasonably large they add very little height. From the side this reads as a low, wide ring rather than a tall one.

How this compares with our other pear three stone rings

We list three other pear three stone designs and all of them use pear cut sides.

The East West Three Stone has large pear sides laid across the finger. The Petite Three Stone has small pear sides tucked in low. The Raised Gallery Three Stone lifts its pear sides up level with the centre on a tall open gallery.

This one is the only one with kite cut sides, and it is the only one where the side stones are a different shape from the centre. If the angular sides in the photograph are what caught your eye, none of the others will substitute.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The sides are kite cut moissanite. Because a kite has fewer, larger facets than a round brilliant, it flashes in broader planes, which again contrasts with the busy fire of the pear.

Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. On a three stone ring this matching matters more than on a pave ring, because the side stones are large enough that a colour difference would be plain to see.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The kites are scaled to the centre so the three stones keep their proportion at every size.

The band

A slim rounded shank that tapers gently from the setting toward the back of the finger. Plain and polished throughout, with no stones below the side kites, so it resizes easily and a wedding band sits close.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm claws against the three white stones give the ring a slightly vintage character. In white metal the three stones read as one continuous band of light, which is a cleaner and more modern effect. Silver gives that same white look for much less. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. There is very little on this ring to trap dirt, so a brush around the claws and underneath the three stones is enough. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Are the kite points fragile? A kite has two points and they are the vulnerable part of the shape, so each has a claw over it. They sit low against the band, which protects them further, but as with any pointed stone this is a ring to take off before rough work.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The kites sit low and the band is plain below them, so a flat band sits close.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably. There are no stones in the shank.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.

Do kite cuts sparkle as much as brilliants? They flash differently, in fewer and broader planes. On this ring the pear does the sparkling and the kites do the framing, which is the effect we wanted.
