Pear Cut Moissanite Hidden Halo Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

This is the slim classic pear solitaire with a secret kept underneath. Look at it from directly above and you see a single pear cut moissanite held in six slender claws on a plain, narrow band, nothing else. Turn your hand and look at the ring in profile and a circle of tiny round moissanite stones appears around the base of the setting, sitting under the centre stone where only you and the person sitting next to you will ever notice them. That circle is what jewellers call a hidden halo, and it is the whole idea of this ring.

We make it to order in our own workshop in Surat, India. We are a family run team and every ring leaves the bench having been checked by one of us, not by a machine.

Why a hidden halo instead of a visible one

A traditional halo surrounds the centre stone from above, which makes the ring look bigger from the top but also changes its character completely. A hidden halo does the opposite. From above the ring stays a clean solitaire with nothing competing with the centre stone. From the side it gains a band of light around the base that lifts the whole head and gives the setting a finished, considered look instead of a bare metal basket.

The hidden halo also throws light back up into the pavilion of the centre stone, so the pear picks up a little extra sparkle when you move your hand under a lamp. It is a subtle effect, not a dramatic one, and we would rather you knew that before you bought than after.

How this compares with our plain slim solitaire

We list a plain version of this exact ring, the Pear Cut Moissanite Classic Six Claw Slim Band Solitaire. Same pear centre, same six claws, same narrow band. The only difference is that the plain one has a bare polished basket underneath and this one has the ring of small stones.

Please compare the side photographs of both listings before you choose. From above you will genuinely struggle to tell them apart. The hidden halo version costs more because there are more stones to set and more hours at the bench. If you mostly see your ring from above, and most people do, the plain version gives you the same look for less money and we would rather say that plainly than sell you the more expensive one by accident. Choose this version if you like knowing the detail is there, if you often look at your ring from the side, or if you simply want the setting to look richer in profile.

The centre stone

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, also called a teardrop cut. It is a brilliant cut, which means the facets are arranged to return light as flashes of white and coloured fire rather than as the broad mirror flashes you get from a step cut. Pear cuts elongate the finger and the point draws the eye down the hand, which is why they remain one of the most requested shapes we make.

Every centre stone we set is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. Moissanite has a refractive index higher than diamond, which is why it fires so strongly. It sits at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among stones you would wear daily, so it stands up to being worn all the time without special care.

You choose the centre size from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Larger stones sit slightly higher and cover more of the finger, and the hidden halo scales with the centre so the proportion stays right whichever size you pick.

The band and the setting

The band is a slim rounded shank, comfortable under the finger and easy to wear next to a wedding band without a gap. The six claws are set three to a side with the point of the pear protected by a claw of its own, which is the detail that matters most on a pear cut because the point is the part most likely to catch.

The hidden halo stones are set in a continuous row around the base of the head. They are small, matched, and set flush enough that they will not snag on clothing.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Silver is the most affordable way to own the design and gives a bright white finish. 10K is the hardest of the golds and the most scratch resistant. 14K is the balance most buyers choose for an everyday engagement ring. 18K has the richest, deepest colour, especially in yellow, and is the softest of the three. All white gold is rhodium plated for a bright white finish, which will need renewing every one to two years depending on how you wear it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Nothing here is pulled off a shelf. Each ring is cast, set, filed and polished for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after you order. That is why we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations rather than the handful a stock holding shop can carry.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush is all it needs. Pay attention underneath the head, because a hidden halo collects a little more soap and skin oil than a plain basket does and it is the underside that dulls first. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take the ring off for the gym, for gardening and for swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will anyone see the hidden halo? You will, every time you look at your hand from the side. Other people will notice it when they are close to you. Across a table, no.

Does it make the ring look bigger? Slightly, because the head is wider at the base, but not in the way a visible halo does. If your goal is maximum finger coverage for the money, a visible halo design will do more.

Can I wear a wedding band flush against it? Yes on most sizes. The hidden halo sits above the band line, so a flat or slightly curved wedding band will still sit close.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own dedicated claw. Pear points are the vulnerable part of the shape on any ring, so we set them with a little extra metal coverage.
