Design & Selection

Save 20%A pear cut moissanite in six ball tipped claws, with shoulders built from interwoven knotwork. On each side the metal loops over and under itself in a continuous knot, the outer loops are set with micropave, and a small round moissanite sits at the heart of each knot where the strands cross. The openings inside the weave are left open, so the shoulders are pierced right through.
We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, and this is one of the more demanding pieces on our bench because the weave has to read correctly from every angle, not just from above.
An interwoven knot has no beginning and no end. The strands pass over and under one another and return to where they started, which is why knotwork has been used for betrothal and marriage jewellery in Celtic and Nordic work for centuries. It is a symbol that predates the diamond solitaire by a very long way.
What makes it work as jewellery rather than as decoration is that the over and under is real. Each strand genuinely passes above one neighbour and below the next, so the shoulders have depth and cast small shadows into themselves. A knot that is merely engraved on a flat surface looks flat, and this one does not.
The single round accent set at the centre of each knot is a small idea that matters. It gives the eye a fixed point in the middle of the weave and stops the pattern from becoming restless.
Our Pave Leaf Openwork ring pierces its shoulders into broad flat leaf shapes. Botanical rather than woven.
Our Split Shank Vine ring separates the band into two branches that loop apart and rejoin. Open, but not interwoven.
This is the only pear ring we make where the metal actually passes through itself. If the knotwork is what drew you to the photograph, this is the one that has it, and there is no substitute among the others.
The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.
The accents are small round moissanite, pave set along the outer loops of each knot with one larger round at each knot centre. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.
Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the knotwork scaled so it stays in proportion.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, which suits knotwork because the shadows inside the weave read as clean grey lines against bright metal. In yellow gold the effect is warmer and more obviously antique. Silver gives the white gold look for much less. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.
Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, pierce, set, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.
Openwork needs more attention than a plain band and we would rather say so. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked into the knot openings from both sides. The whole point of a pierced weave is the light and shadow inside it, and hand cream trapped in the openings kills that faster than anything. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.
Will a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly. The knotwork gives the shoulders a shaped and slightly uneven outline. A contoured band works better, or wear it alone, which is what we would suggest for a ring with this much going on.
Can it be resized? Within a narrow range only. The pave and the piercing both limit how far the shank can be worked. Please get the size right and write to us if you are unsure.
Is the knot really woven or just cast to look like it? The strands genuinely pass over and under one another. You can see it clearly in the side photographs, where the crossings sit at different heights.
Do the small stones fall out? Properly set pave does not, but any set band is more vulnerable to knocks than a plain one. Have the settings checked every couple of years.
Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
