The pear

A pear combines the brilliance of a round with the elongating effect of a marquise: rounded at one end and pointed at the other. Worn point toward the fingertip, it makes the hand look long and slender. Its point is its most vulnerable area, which is exactly why a bezel suits it so well.

Why a bezel for a pear

A bezel wraps the entire edge of the stone in metal, so the point is completely protected from knocks and chipping. There are no claws to catch, and the polished rim outlines the teardrop in a crisp line of gold. It is one of the most practical and most modern ways to wear this shape.

How it differs from our other pear rings

Our pear halo rings surround the stone with small diamonds, and our pear hidden halo adds sparkle underneath. This one is the most minimal: a single pear in a bezel.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose gold gives the teardrop a soft blush, yellow gold a warm frame, and white gold a crisp, icy line. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed to your pear and burnished over its edge by hand, with extra care at the point. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. With no claws, a quick brush on the underside of the stone is enough. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Is the point protected? Completely. The bezel covers it.

Which way should the point face? Traditionally toward the fingertip. We can set it the other way on request.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits close alongside the tapered shoulders.

Can it be resized? Yes, freely.
