There is almost nothing to this ring except the stone. The band is a thin round wire, about 1.6 mm, and the head is as compact as a four claw setting can be made, sitting low enough that the oval seems to rest directly on the finger. Turn it sideways and the only ornament is a small teardrop pierced through the basket wall, which is there to let light in rather than to be noticed. Design and craftsmanship

Two decisions make this ring work. The first is band width. At 1.6 mm the shank gives the eye almost nothing to measure the oval against, so the stone reads as large as it possibly can. The second is head height. Dropping the basket as low as the pavilion allows keeps the ring stable on the finger, stops it spinning under its own weight, and means it slides under a shirt cuff without catching. The teardrop cut into the basket wall is functional as well as decorative, since it opens the side of the setting to light. Every piece is finished by hand by our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire. On a ring this bare the stone carries everything, which is why we set only VVS clarity colorless material here. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the strongest contrast between the thin warm band and the colorless stone. White gold makes the band almost vanish so only the oval registers. Rose gold sits between them. On a band this narrow we recommend 14K over 18K, because it is harder and holds its round profile better over years of wear, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Will a thin band make the stone look bigger?
Yes, and more than any other single design choice. The eye judges the stone against the width of the metal beside it, so a 1.6 mm band makes the same oval read noticeably larger than a 2.5 mm one would.

Is a 1.6 mm band strong enough for daily wear?
In solid gold, yes. It is thin but round in section, which is the strongest profile for its weight, and gold work hardens as it is worn. If you are hard on jewellery choose 14K, or ask us to make it at 1.8 mm at no extra cost.

Why a low profile head?
Because a heavy stone on a thin band wants to rotate. Keeping the head low puts the weight close to the finger, which keeps the ring sitting upright and stops it catching on things.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shank is straight and round and the head sits low, so a straight band lies against it neatly. A matching thin band pairs best visually.

What is the teardrop in the setting for?
It is a small opening pierced through the basket wall. It lets light into the side of the stone and gives the profile a detail without adding bulk.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. There is very little metal to trap residue, so this is one of the easiest ring styles to keep clean. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
