A tapered baguette is a long rectangular step cut that narrows toward one end, and it is the classic partner for a large centre stone because it points the eye inward. Here one lies on each side of an oval moissanite, wide end against the centre, narrow end running out along the shoulder. The result is a head that reads much wider than the oval alone without adding height or bulk. There is nothing else on the ring: the band is slim, straight and polished. Design and craftsmanship

Baguettes are set differently from brilliants. Instead of prongs pinching the girdle, each stone is captured between two bars of metal, one at each end, which holds it flat and level and leaves the long sides completely clear. The seat has to be cut square to a thousandth, because a step cut sitting even slightly askew is obvious against a straight bar. The taper of each stone is matched to the curve of the shoulder so the outer edge finishes flush with the band rather than overhanging it. The oval sits low in a basket with a gallery wire bracing it from below. Every piece is finished by hand by our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire. In a baguette that shows as wide clean flashes across the table rather than fine sparkle, which is exactly the contrast this design is built on. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

White gold, as photographed, is the most authentic choice for an art deco design and keeps the three stones reading as one continuous line. Yellow gold gives the same geometry a warmer mid century feel. Rose gold is the softest. For everyday wear 14K is harder than 18K and holds bar settings on flat cornered stones more securely, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

The band carries no stones, so a jeweller can resize the ring later without disturbing the setting. Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone and both baguettes are lab created moissanite, and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

What is a tapered baguette?
A long rectangular step cut stone that is wider at one end than the other. Placed with the wide end against the centre stone it creates a visual arrow pointing inward, which is why it has been used beside large stones for a century.

Why does this style suit an oval?
Because the straight lines of the baguettes contrast with the curve of the oval, and the taper extends the outline of the head sideways across the finger, which suits an elongated centre stone.

Are baguettes fragile?
Their corners are the vulnerable part, which is why we bar set them, capturing each stone between two rails rather than gripping the corners with prongs. Handled normally they are secure, and we offer a free annual setting check.

Do step cuts show inclusions more?
Yes, which is why clarity matters here. We use VVS clarity moissanite in all three stones so the open tables stay clean.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The baguettes sit at the top of the shank and the band below them is straight and plain, so a straight wedding band lies flat with no gap.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Wipe the flat tables of the baguettes with a lint free cloth afterwards, since step cuts show fingerprints more than brilliants.
