Instead of a ring of small stones, the halo here is made of metal. A solid domed plate surrounds the oval on all sides, wider at the top and bottom than at the sides, and six pointed claws reach in over the plate to grip the stone. The effect is closer to a signet or a medallion than to a conventional engagement ring: a single bright stone set into a broad field of gold. The band splits just below the head and rejoins at the base, keeping the shank slim so the head reads as the whole design. Made to order in Surat, India, in ten metals and four centre stone sizes.

Design and craftsmanship

A metal halo lives or dies on the quality of its surface. There are no stones to distract the eye, so every curve has to be true and the polish has to be flawless across the whole dome. Our bench forms the halo as a single piece, files the dome to an even fall from the claw line down to the outer edge, then polishes it in stages so no flat spots or ripples remain. The six claws are shaped last, each one drawn to a point and bent in over the girdle of the stone, which is why they read as small arrowheads rather than round beads. The split shank is soldered to the underside of the halo at four points, which spreads the load and keeps the head from rocking. Every ring is hand finished in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10 it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire, and a single stone set in a broad field of plain metal shows that fire clearly because nothing else on the ring competes for attention. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, is what this design was drawn for, since the point of a metal halo is the metal itself. Rose gold gives the same effect in a warmer tone. White gold makes the halo read as a bright silver frame rather than a gold one. For daily wear 14K resists scratching on the large polished dome better than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design, though it will show marks sooner.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The shank is plain, so the ring can be resized at the base later without touching the head.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Is the halo set with small stones?
No. It is solid metal. That is the whole idea of the design, and it is why this ring looks bolder and more graphic than a conventional pave halo.

Does the metal halo make the stone look bigger?
Yes, in the sense that the whole head is much larger than the stone alone, so the ring reads as substantial from across a room. A stone set pave halo makes the stone itself look bigger; this one makes the ring look bigger.

What are pointed claws?
Each of the six prongs is filed to a point rather than rounded off, so it reads as a small arrowhead against the polished dome. It is a deliberate detail, not a plain prong.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
The halo overhangs the shank, so a straight band meets the ring at the base of the halo with a small gap. A contoured band that curves around the halo edge sits properly, and we can make one to match.

Does the polished dome scratch?
Any large polished surface shows scratches with wear. This is normal and a polish restores it. 14K and 18K gold hold up better here than sterling silver.

Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. We scale the halo to the stone, so the proportion of metal to stone stays the same. A 4 or 5 carat version is a genuinely large ring.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush around the six claws, then a soft cloth over the dome. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth to keep the polish bright.

How long does it take to make?
