Design and craftsmanship

The secret halo here is a narrow straight collar rather than a full halo following the oval outline. It reads as one clean band of light in profile instead of an outline of the stone, which suits the very plain shank underneath. That shank is a fine rounded wire of about 1.6 mm, the narrowest band in this range, and it is deliberately kept thin so the oval looks as large as possible on the finger. The head sits slightly raised, which also means a wedding band tucks underneath without a gap. Every piece is hand set and finished by our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire, which is the quality most buyers notice first. On a ring this plain there is nothing else competing for attention, so the centre stone does all the work. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the strongest contrast against a colorless stone and makes the thin band read as a fine gold line on the finger. For everyday wear 14K is harder and better suited to a thin shank than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone and the secret halo stones are lab created moissanite, and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

What is the difference between a secret halo and a hidden halo?
They are closely related. A hidden halo usually follows the full outline of the centre stone underneath it. A secret halo, as used here, is a narrower straight collar of pave sitting just below the head. It shows less, which is the point.

Is a 1.6 mm band too thin for daily wear?
In 10K, 14K and 18K gold it is fine for normal daily wear. In 925 sterling silver a band this fine is softer and will show wear and bending sooner, so choose gold if you plan to wear it every day for many years.

Does the thin band make the stone look bigger?
Yes. A narrow shank gives the eye less metal to compare the stone against, so the same oval reads noticeably larger on a 1.6 mm band than on a 2.5 mm one.

Will a wedding band sit flush?
Yes. The head is raised by the collar and the shank is plain, so a straight band tucks in underneath with no gap.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating, so it cannot wear off.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the collar under the head where soap residue collects. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.
