The shank itself splits at the top and rises into four long claw prongs that curve over the oval, so the metal flows in one continuous line from the finger to the stone. The band is petite and tapers toward the base, which keeps the ring light on the hand and lets the oval sit as the only thing you notice. Design and craftsmanship

Building the prongs out of the shank rather than soldering a separate head onto it takes more bench time but gives a cleaner result. There is no visible seam where a head would normally join, and the underside of the ring stays smooth against the finger. Because nothing sits below the stone, light enters the pavilion from every direction, which is why an open setting like this reads brighter than a closed one at the same carat weight. The shank measures about 1.9 mm across the shoulders and narrows to roughly 1.6 mm at the base, and the inside is comfort fit with a rounded edge. How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire. In an open setting like this one that fire is especially visible, because there is no metal underneath the stone to block light. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the warmest contrast against a colorless oval. White gold makes the prongs almost disappear so the stone reads larger. Rose gold suits warmer skin tones. For a petite band worn daily, 14K is the practical choice because it is harder than 18K and holds its shape better over the years, while 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. A plain tapered shank resizes easily later, though ordering the correct size at the outset is always better. Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

What makes this different from a standard solitaire?
There is no separate head. The prongs are formed from the shank as it splits at the top, so there is no seam and nothing sits under the stone. The band also tapers, which most classic solitaires do not.

Is a petite band strong enough for daily wear?
Yes in solid gold. At about 1.6 mm at the base a tapered shank is thin but not fragile, and gold work hardens as it is worn. If you work with your hands every day we would suggest 14K over 18K, or ask us to keep the base at 1.8 mm at no extra cost.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The prongs rise above the finger and the shank is plain, so a straight wedding band sits flat with no gap on either side.

Does the open setting make the stone look bigger?
It helps. With no basket and no metal below the girdle, more of the stone is visible from the side, so a 2 carat oval in this setting looks larger than the same stone in a closed setting.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. An open setting is the easiest kind to clean because you can reach the whole pavilion. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes ten to fourteen working days, plus shipping time. Every ring is cut and set only after it is ordered.
