Oval Moissanite Knife Edge Solitaire Engagement Ring

The band on this ring is not round. It rises to a soft ridge along its centre line, a knife edge, so instead of one broad reflection you get two narrow bands of light running around the finger on either side of the ridge. Toward the top the shank pinches in and the ridge resolves into four claw prongs that fold over the oval. It is a solitaire with one idea in it, executed properly, and the effect is that the band looks thinner and brighter than a plain round shank of the same weight. Design and craftsmanship

A knife edge has to be filed and polished by hand along its whole length, and the ridge must stay dead centre or the two reflections it produces will not match. That is the entire difficulty of the design and the reason a good one looks so much better than a cast approximation. Where the shank meets the head it pinches inward, which narrows the band at exactly the point where it sits beside the stone and makes the oval look wider by contrast. The prongs are formed from that pinched section rather than soldered on, so there is no seam. The band is about 2 mm across at the base and tapers to roughly 1.7 mm at the shoulders. Every piece is finished by hand by our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire, which pairs well with the sharp linear reflections of the knife edge band. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, shows the knife edge most clearly because the ridge line reads as a bright stripe against the warmer flanks. White gold gives a sharper, more architectural version. Rose gold is the softest. For everyday wear 14K holds a crisp edge longer than the softer 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. A knife edge shank can be resized by a competent jeweller, though the ridge has to be refiled and repolished across the join, so ordering the correct size at the outset gives a better result. Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

What is a knife edge band?
A band whose outer surface rises to a ridge down the centre rather than being rounded or flat. It catches light in two narrow lines instead of one broad one, which makes the band look slimmer and brighter.

Is a knife edge uncomfortable to wear?
No. The edge is on the outside of the band only and is softened, not sharp. The inside is a smooth comfort fit curve, so the ring feels no different from a plain band on the finger.

Why does the band pinch near the stone?
Narrowing the shank where it meets the head removes metal from right beside the centre stone, so the oval reads larger. It also creates the line that turns into the prongs.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes against the shank, though a flat wedding band will meet a knife edge at its ridge rather than lying against a flat face. A matching knife edge band pairs perfectly.

Does the ridge wear down over time?
Very slowly, and it softens rather than disappearing. We can refile and repolish the edge at any point in the ring's life.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working under the stone where the prongs meet the shank. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes ten to fourteen working days, plus shipping time. Every ring is cut and set only after it is ordered.
