Oval Moissanite Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring

The two shoulders of this ring rise from the band in a smooth arch and meet the head from underneath, the way the arches of a cathedral carry a vault. That is where the name comes from and it is the only decoration the ring has: no accents, no engraving, no halo. The shank narrows towards the bottom of the finger and widens as it climbs, which lifts the oval visually and makes the stone look larger than it does on a straight band of the same weight. Design and craftsmanship

A cathedral shoulder has to be carved, not bent. Our goldsmiths file the arch from a solid shank so the curve runs true from the widest point at the head down to the narrowest point at the base, then hollow the underside so the ring is not unnecessarily heavy where nobody sees it. The two arches must mirror each other exactly, because on a plain polished ring the reflection travelling along each shoulder shows any difference immediately. The head sits low between the arches, which is what keeps the ring stable on the finger rather than top heavy. Every ring is finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. On a bare cathedral setting the stone is open on all sides and light enters from every direction, which suits moissanite because its higher refractive index turns that light into strong coloured fire. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. White gold, as photographed, gives the arches a bright architectural line. Yellow gold makes the same shape read warmer and more traditional. Rose gold softens it. For a design defined entirely by its shape, 14K holds an arch crisply over decades, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to own the look.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The band is plain, so it can be resized easily in either direction later.

Custom orders

We can add pave along the shoulders, add a hidden halo between the arches, raise or lower the head, widen the band, set the oval east west, or use a lab grown diamond or coloured stone in the centre. Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and there are no other stones on the ring. We never describe it as a diamond.

What is a cathedral setting?
One where the shoulders of the band arch upward and support the head from underneath, rather than the head sitting on top of a straight shank. It adds height and structure without adding stones.

Does it make the stone look bigger?
It can. Lifting and framing the oval between two rising arches draws the eye upward, and the narrowed base makes the head look wider by contrast.

Will a wedding band sit flush?
Not completely. Cathedral shoulders curve down to meet the band, so a straight band usually leaves a small gap at the sides. A contoured band solves this and we can shape one to your ring.

How is this different from your other plain solitaires?
Our straight shank solitaires keep the same width all the way round and sit flush with a plain wedding band. This one arches and tapers, so it has more presence in profile and a more traditional silhouette.

Is it comfortable?
Yes. The head sits lower than on a tall four prong solitaire, and the underside of the arches is hollowed and rounded so nothing digs into the neighbouring fingers.

Which centre size suits it?
All four, and the cathedral shape scales with the stone. A 5 carat oval on this setting is dramatic; a 2 carat is a classic understated solitaire.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush around the prongs and under the head, then rinse and pat dry. With no accent stones this ring is very easy to keep clean.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes ten to fourteen working days, plus shipping time. Every ring is made only after it is ordered.
