This is the plainest kind of engagement ring to describe and the hardest to make well, because there is nothing to distract from proportion. The shank is half round, which means rounded on the outside and flat on the inside, the profile used for wedding bands for centuries because the rounded outer face wears comfortably against the neighbouring fingers while the flat inner face stops the ring rotating. It does not taper. It runs at the same generous width from the head right round to the palm, which is what gives the ring its settled, solid look rather than the fine pointed look of a tapered shank. Under the stone the basket is compact and low, and instead of a plain rail joining the four claws it is braced by two bars that cross beneath the pavilion. That cross is a structural decision. Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

What is a half round band

Why does the band not taper
An even width shank looks settled and substantial. A tapered shank narrows at the head to make the stone look larger, which is a different effect and one we can make for you if you prefer it.
