Why two accent shapes

Plain round pave is the default for a reason: it is even and bright. But it is also uniform, and on a busy hand of rings it can blur into a line of glitter. Adding marquise accents near the head breaks that uniformity. Their pointed shapes fan outward from the oval, so the shoulders read as a deliberate design rather than a strip of sparkle.

The accent weight here is close to half a carat in total, generous enough that the shoulders hold their own beside a 2 carat centre and still balanced beneath a 5 carat one.

The oval

An oval is a brilliant cut stretched along one axis. It faces up around ten percent larger than a round of the same weight, lengthens the finger, and shares its elongated geometry with the marquise accents beside it, which is why the two shapes sit so naturally together.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow and rose gold outline each marquise so the fan pattern stands out, while white metal blends everything into continuous light. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Marquise accents are seated individually so their points sit below the surrounding metal, and the round pave is raised by hand along both shoulders. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush along the shoulders and underneath the head. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The marquise and round accents are matched to the same grade.

Do the marquise points chip? Each is seated with its points protected by metal, which is the standard way to keep small marquise stones safe.

How is this different from a plain oval pave ring? The marquise accents near the head add shape and direction that round pave alone does not.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The head is raised above tapering shoulders.

Can it be resized? Yes. The lower shank is plain.
