Putting a straight edged stone against a curved one is a problem the cutter has to solve before the setter can begin. A baguette has four flat sides. A marquise has two shallow curves meeting at points. Set them side by side as cut and they touch at a single spot with a visible wedge of daylight behind the contact, which on a large centre stone is impossible to ignore. The answer is to re-cut the inner end of each baguette to a shallow concave that follows the exact curve of the marquise at its girdle, so the two stones meet along a line rather than at a point.
