A marquise cut lab grown diamond set east to west across the finger, over a hidden halo, on a band with pave running down both shoulders. Almost every marquise ring is set north to south, pointing along the finger. Turning the stone ninety degrees changes the ring completely. The two points now reach out across the finger toward the edges of the hand, so the ring occupies its full width and reads as a bold horizontal bar rather than a vertical line. It is the more modern and more unusual way to wear the shape, and it is noticeably more comfortable, because the points sit clear of the knuckle instead of running over it. Accent stones and band

Round pave diamonds run down both shoulders of the band, each in its own bead of raised metal, stopping before the base so the lower shank stays plain. A row of pave sits inside the basket beneath the centre stone, visible only from the side.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. White gold, as photographed, keeps the whole ring colourless so the pave shoulders merge into the centre stone and the horizontal line runs unbroken. Yellow and rose gold separate the metal from the stones and make the shape more defined.

Frequently asked questions

What does east west mean?
The long axis of the stone runs across the finger rather than along it. On a marquise this turns a vertical line into a horizontal bar and gives a much more contemporary look than the traditional orientation.

Is east west more comfortable?
Usually yes. Set north to south, a long marquise extends toward the knuckle and can catch when you bend your finger. Set east to west, the length runs across the finger where there is nothing to interfere with.

Does it still look large?
Yes, and arguably larger. A marquise has the greatest surface area per carat of any common shape, and turned sideways it fills the entire width of the finger, which reads as a bigger ring than the same stone pointing lengthways.

Are the points protected?
Yes. A V shaped claw caps each point and takes any knock before the diamond does, which is essential on a marquise however it is oriented.

What is a hidden halo?
A row of small diamonds set into the basket beneath the centre stone, facing outward instead of upward. Invisible from above, but it lights the ring in profile and lifts the head slightly so a wedding band can sit alongside.

Do I get a certificate?
Yes. A free IGI certificate for the centre stone comes with every order, listing colour, clarity, cut and carat weight.

What is the bow tie in a marquise?
A dark band across the middle of some marquise stones where light escapes through the pavilion rather than returning to the eye. Careful proportions minimise it, which is why we cut to Excellent proportions and symmetry.

Why buy a lab grown diamond

A lab grown diamond is chemically and optically the same as a mined one, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories, at a fraction of the price. That is what makes a VVS2 E colour marquise at 4 or 5 carat achievable, and at that size the east west orientation is at its most striking.
