A marquise cut lab grown diamond set across a bypass shank, where the two ends of the band sweep past one another instead of meeting under the stone. The diamond sits on the diagonal, following the line of the bypass rather than sitting square to the finger, and it is held at each pointed end by a pair of fine claws that fold over the tips. Because the band never closes behind the stone the whole setting reads as one continuous curve, and there is open space visible on either side of the marquise. Nothing else is added. Band details

A slim plain band that divides below the stone and curves past itself, each arm tapering as it rises to meet the marquise from opposite sides. No stones, engraving or milgrain anywhere. The open bypass gives the ring an asymmetric silhouette that sits differently on the finger from a conventional closed shank.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. On a design with no accent stones the metal carries the whole shape. Yellow and rose gold make the bypass curve read clearly as a line drawn around the diamond. White gold and sterling silver let the arms recede so the marquise appears suspended in the opening.

What is a bypass setting?
A shank that does not close into a full circle behind the stone. The two ends pass one another and continue, so the band appears to wrap around the finger in a spiral rather than meeting at a join. It leaves visible open space beside the centre stone.

Why is the marquise set on the diagonal?
It follows the direction of the bypass. Setting the stone along that diagonal keeps the line of the band and the long axis of the diamond continuous, which is what makes the design read as one sweep instead of a stone dropped onto a curve.

Are the pointed tips of a marquise fragile?
The tips are the thinnest part of any marquise, which is why each one here is covered by a pair of claws that fold over the point rather than a single claw. That is the standard protection for this shape.

Does a marquise look larger than other cuts?
Yes. A marquise has one of the largest surface areas per carat of any shape, so it covers more of the finger than a round or cushion of the same weight, and its length is flattering on the hand.
