Marquise Cut Lab Grown Diamond Milgrain Bezel Engagement Ring, E Color VVS2

A marquise cut lab grown diamond held in a bezel finished with milgrain, a fine row of tiny beads worked along the edge of the metal rim. Milgrain is a hand technique from the early twentieth century, and it is the detail that separates an antique looking ring from a plain modern one. Here it runs the whole way around the bezel, so the outline of the marquise is drawn twice, once by the metal and once by the beading. The bezel itself does the practical work, wrapping the two pointed tips that are the weak spot of every marquise. Every diamond is a laboratory grown diamond, identical in carbon structure, hardness and brilliance to a mined diamond, graded E colour and VVS2 clarity. Each ring is made to order in our own Surat workshop and ships with a free IGI certificate for the centre stone.

Metal options

This ring is made to order in ten metal choices, so you can match it to jewellery you already wear.

  • 925 Sterling Silver
  • 10K Yellow Gold, 10K Rose Gold, 10K White Gold
  • 14K Yellow Gold, 14K Rose Gold, 14K White Gold
  • 18K Yellow Gold, 18K Rose Gold, 18K White Gold

All gold options are solid gold, never plated or filled. White gold is finished with rhodium for a bright white surface and is the metal shown in the photographs, which suits the antique character of milgrain. Because the beading is metalwork rather than stone, the metal you choose is what the detail is made of.

Frequently asked questions

What is milgrain

Milgrain is a row of very small metal beads worked along an edge, traditionally raised with a hand tool called a knurling wheel. It was widely used in Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery to soften the boundary between metal and stone and to catch light along a line that would otherwise be flat. On this ring it runs around the whole bezel rim.

Why bezel set a marquise diamond

Because the tips are the vulnerable part of the shape. A marquise comes to a fine point at each end, and points are where any faceted stone is most likely to chip. A bezel wraps metal fully around both tips, giving considerably more protection than the V prongs used on a conventional marquise setting.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond

Yes. A lab grown diamond is real diamond. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index and the same fire and brilliance as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled laboratory over a few weeks instead of underground over billions of years. No jeweller can tell the difference by eye, only specialist equipment reading growth patterns can separate the two.

Does milgrain wear away

Slowly, over many years of daily wear, the beads soften as any fine metalwork does. It is not a fault, it is how antique rings acquire their character. If you want the definition restored, a jeweller can re-cut the milgrain during a routine service, and we are happy to do that for rings we have made.

Why do marquise diamonds look larger than other shapes

A marquise has the largest face up area per carat of any diamond shape. The weight is spread across a long shallow outline rather than concentrated in depth, so it looks noticeably bigger than a round of the same carat weight, and the elongated shape has a slimming effect on the finger.

Does this ring come with a certificate

Yes. Every ring ships with a free IGI certificate for the centre stone. IGI is the International Gemological Institute, one of the largest independent diamond grading laboratories in the world. The certificate confirms the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade and the laboratory grown origin. There is no extra charge for the certificate.

What does E colour VVS2 actually mean

E colour is the second highest grade on the diamond colour scale and sits inside the colourless range, so the diamond looks bright white with no warm or yellow tint. VVS2 means very very slightly included, the second highest clarity tier. Any inclusions are so small that a trained grader needs 10x magnification to find them and they are completely invisible to the naked eye.

Why buy a lab grown diamond

A lab grown diamond gives you a materially identical stone for a fraction of the price of a mined equivalent, which is what makes a 4 carat or 5 carat marquise centre realistic on a normal budget. A marquise also has the largest face up area per carat of any shape, so the two effects compound and the stone wears very large for its price. Because the origin of every stone is documented from the moment it is grown, a lab grown diamond is conflict free by definition. Growing a diamond also avoids the open pit excavation, land disruption and water use that mining a comparable stone requires.
