The hardest shape to cut well

A heart is a pear with a cleft cut into the rounded end, and everything depends on symmetry: the two lobes must match, the cleft must be sharp and centred, and the point must line up with it exactly. A heart that is even slightly lopsided is obvious to anyone, which is why well cut hearts are less common than they should be. We reject stones where the lobes are uneven.

Three claws, placed carefully

One claw covers the point and one sits on each lobe, leaving the cleft completely clear. Putting metal across the cleft is the usual mistake; it closes the notch visually and the stone stops reading as a heart at arm's length.

A band with a rhythm

Marquise, round, marquise, each individually set with gold showing between. The marquises echo the pointed end of the heart and lead the eye along the finger, while the rounds keep the spacing even.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The claws are placed to leave the cleft open, the halo is set into the basket before the head is joined to the band, and the band accents are spaced out from the centre so both shoulders match. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the cleft and up into the hidden halo from below. The point and the two lobes are the thinnest parts of a heart, so avoid knocks. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre heart and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre heart. The halo and band accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

What size should a heart be to read clearly? Below about one carat the cleft becomes hard to see at a distance and the stone can look like a round. At the two carat minimum we offer here the shape is unmistakable.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly, since the accents are raised and the point of the heart sits low. A chevron band follows the point, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
