An emerald cut is a step cut, not a brilliant. Instead of hundreds of small triangular facets scattering light into flashes, it has long parallel facets cut in terraces down to the table, which behave like a set of mirrors. The result is broad slow flashes and the deep open window through the middle that people call the hall of mirrors. This makes the cut unusually honest, since there is little sparkle to hide inclusions or tint behind, which is why colour and clarity are worth paying attention to here more than in any other shape. The setting is deliberately quiet for that reason. A single fine row of pave on each shoulder gives just enough light at the edges to frame the stone, the claws are flat and low so they do not break the rectangle, and the stone sits close to the finger so the long facets stay parallel to the eye.

Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, hardness and optical behaviour as a mined diamond and is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.
