Emerald Cut Moissanite Vintage Hand Engraved Milgrain Solitaire Engagement Ring

An emerald cut moissanite set in four slim prongs above a band covered in hand engraved scrollwork, with a fine beaded milgrain edge running along both sides of the shank and around the base of the setting. There are no accent stones anywhere on this ring. All of the detail is cut into the metal itself, which is how engagement rings were decorated before pave became the default, and it is why this design reads as genuinely antique rather than merely old fashioned.

Why this ring works

Engraving and milgrain do something pave cannot. They catch light in short broken lines instead of points, so the band shimmers softly rather than sparkling, and that quieter texture is a natural partner for a step cut centre stone. An emerald cut already behaves like a mirror rather than a prism, and putting it above a row of bright pave often makes the centre stone look flat by comparison. Engraved metal never competes. The cathedral shoulders also rise to meet the setting, which supports the long centre stone and stops it looking perched.

Setting and band

Four claw prongs hold the corners of the emerald cut above an open square basket. The shoulders rise in a low cathedral curve. Scrollwork is engraved along the outer face of the shank and continues onto the sides of the setting, edged top and bottom with milgrain beading. The band is approximately two millimetres wide with a comfortable rounded interior. Metal is solid throughout, never plated over brass.

Metal options

Choose from recycled 925 sterling silver, or solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose and white. Yellow gold, as photographed, is the most authentic choice for an engraved antique style ring and shows the scrollwork most clearly. Rose gold gives a warmer, more romantic version of the same look. White gold and sterling silver make the engraving read as texture rather than ornament. White gold is rhodium finished.

Ring sizing

Every ring is made to order in your size. Sizes run from 3 to 13, including half sizes. Because the engraving runs all the way around the shank, this design is best ordered in the correct size rather than resized later, so contact us if you are unsure and we will help before production starts.

Care

Engraved grooves hold soap film, so clean the ring with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, brushing along the direction of the scrollwork. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth. Milgrain beading softens very slowly over many years of wear, which is part of the character of an engraved ring. Remove the ring before swimming, gardening or lifting weights.

Questions people ask

What is milgrain? Milgrain is a row of tiny metal beads pressed along an edge with a knurling tool. It softens the line between metal and stone and is one of the defining details of Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery.

Is the engraving machine cut or by hand? Each ring is engraved by hand after casting, so no two are identical under a loupe. That is what gives hand engraving its depth compared with a cast in pattern.

Will an engraved ring wear smooth over time? Very slowly, and mostly on the underside where it contacts other fingers. The outer scrollwork stays crisp for decades with normal wear and can be re cut by any bench jeweller if it ever softens.

Which metal should I choose? For an authentic antique look choose yellow or rose gold. For maximum whiteness in the centre stone choose white gold or sterling silver. For daily wear over decades, 14K balances colour and durability best.
