Emerald Cut Moissanite Hand Engraved Scroll Cathedral Engagement Ring

An emerald cut moissanite in four claws above a milgrain edged basket, on a cathedral shank whose every surface is covered in hand engraved scrollwork. The engraving runs across the top of the band and down both flanks, continuing over the raised cathedral shoulders and around the outside of the head. Milgrain beading edges the basket and both rims of the shank. There are no accent stones anywhere.

Why this ring works

Cathedral shoulders rise up to meet the setting instead of stopping flat beneath it, which supports a large stone and lifts the whole head visually. Covering those raised shoulders in engraving turns a structural feature into the main decorative event. The reason this style has lasted since the 1910s is that engraved gold does not depend on stones staying in place. There is nothing to lose and nothing to reset, and when the pattern eventually softens after decades of wear a jeweller can simply re cut it.

Setting and band

Four claw prongs hold the corners of the emerald cut in a milgrain edged basket that sits above open cathedral arches. The shoulders rise from the shank to meet the head on both sides. Foliate scrollwork is hand engraved across the top face of the band, down both flanks, over the cathedral shoulders and around the outside of the basket, with milgrain beading along every rim. Band width is approximately two millimetres. Metal is solid throughout with a polished interior.

Metal options

Choose from recycled 925 sterling silver, or solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose and white. Yellow gold, as photographed, shows engraving better than any other metal, because the depth of each cut reads as a shadow against a warm surface. Rose gold is a close second. White gold and sterling silver flatten the pattern slightly but give a platinum era look. White gold is rhodium finished.

Care

Engraved grooves hold soap film and hand cream, and a dirty engraving looks flat rather than sharp. Clean every few weeks with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, working along the direction of the scrollwork and up through the cathedral arches from underneath. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth.

Questions people ask

What is a cathedral setting? One where the shoulders of the band arch upward to meet the head, like the vaulting of a cathedral. It adds height and support without adding bulk under the finger.

Is the engraving cast or cut by hand? Cut by hand after casting. A hand engraved cut has a bright polished facet at its base that catches light, which a moulded pattern cannot reproduce.

Will the pattern wear away? Over decades, and mostly on the underside where it rubs. It can be re cut. That repairability is exactly why the technique outlasted the era that invented it.

Which metal should I choose? Yellow or rose gold to show the engraving at its best. White gold or sterling silver for a cooler antique platinum look. For daily wear over decades, 14K balances colour and durability best.
