An Art Deco idea

The emerald cut is a step cut: long, parallel facets arranged like a staircase down the sides of a rectangular stone with cut corners. It produces broad flashes of light and a calm, mirror like look rather than scattered sparkle. Surrounding it with a halo of brilliant cut diamonds sets up a contrast that jewellers of the Art Deco era loved: the cool geometry of the step cut in the middle, and a fine glittering border around it.

The halo follows the rectangular outline and cut corners of the emerald cut exactly, and the pave continues down the band so the sparkle flows from the frame into the shank. The vintage character comes from the finish of the metal around the stones, which gives the ring a heirloom look even when new.

Why E colour and VVS2 matter on an emerald cut

A step cut has a large open table that shows the inside of the stone clearly. That is why every centre stone we use is E colour and VVS2 clarity: colourless and, to the naked eye, completely clean.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold gives the classic platinum look of true Art Deco pieces, yellow gold makes it warmer and more romantic, and rose gold gives it a softer, antique feel. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is built around the exact outline of your emerald cut, the pave and halo are set by hand under a microscope, and the vintage detailing is finished by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush around the halo and along the band, where soap and lotion collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The halo and pave are matched to the same grade.

Does the halo make the stone look bigger? Yes. A halo adds roughly half a size to the visible outline of the centre stone.

Is this a genuine antique? No. It is newly made to order in a vintage inspired style.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits close alongside. For a completely flush fit, a slightly curved band works best with a halo.

Can it be resized? Within limits. A plain section at the base of the band allows adjustment.
