An emerald cut lab grown diamond in corner claws on a fine band whose accents do not sit in a line. Each round is placed a little above or a little below the centre of the shank, alternating as the row travels, so the band reads as a zigzag of light rather than a straight run.

A conventional accent shank has one axis: every stone sits on the centreline and the row draws a straight line down the finger. That line is doing something you only notice when it is removed. It runs parallel to the long edge of a rectangular centre stone, and two parallel straight lines close together tend to read as a single stiff geometry. Staggering the accents breaks that parallel. There is no longer a continuous line to compare the stone against, so the emerald cut is left as the only straight-edged element in the design and its outline reads more sharply for having nothing to echo it. The zigzag also produces a small practical benefit: because the stones sit off-centre alternately, each one presents its table at a slightly different angle to the light, and the row rarely goes dark all at once the way a single-axis row can.
