The emerald cut

An emerald cut is a step cut: long, parallel facets arranged like a staircase down the sides of a rectangular stone with cut corners. Instead of fine sparkle it gives broad, calm flashes of light, often described as a hall of mirrors. It is the shape of old Hollywood and Art Deco glamour, and it looks larger face up than many shapes of the same weight.

Why E colour and VVS2 matter here

A step cut has a wide open table that shows the inside of the stone clearly. That is why every centre stone we use is E colour and VVS2 clarity: colourless and, to the naked eye, completely clean. On an emerald cut, grade is everything.

Why claws, not a bezel

Four claws on the cut corners hold the stone securely while leaving the long sides fully open to light. Compared with our emerald bezel rings, this setting shows more of the diamond and sits a little higher for extra brightness.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold gives an emerald cut its vintage glamour, and white gold makes it crisp and architectural. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The claws are placed on the cut corners of your stone and the ring is finished for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A step cut shows a film of grease quickly, so clean under the stone regularly. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Does an emerald cut sparkle? It flashes rather than glitters: broad, bright planes of light.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and the head sits above it.

Emerald cut or radiant? Same outline. The emerald is step cut and calm; the radiant is brilliant cut and sparkly.
