This is a vintage inspired engagement ring with an emerald cut lab grown diamond raised over shoulders that carry three separate rows of pave diamonds, each row outlined with hand applied milgrain beading.

The shoulders are the reason this ring looks older than it is. Instead of one flat line of pave, the band is shaped with a slight ridge down the centre and the diamonds are set on the two sloping faces as well as along the top. From above you see a wide band of light. From the side the rows step down in tiers, which is a construction jewellers used long before modern flat pave became common.

Between every row runs a line of milgrain. Our setters raise those tiny beads one at a time with a hand tool along the edge of the metal, so the border has the softly irregular quality of antique work rather than a machine cut line.

Look at the ring in profile and you will find a second surprise. The gallery under the centre stone is cut into a scalloped arch and a further set of diamonds is bezel set inside those arches, so the ring stays decorated at exactly the angle other people see it from when it is on the hand.

The centre diamond sits in four claws over the corners of the step cut, held high enough that the wide table stays completely open. The band narrows to a plain polished shank at the back, which keeps a heavily decorated ring comfortable for daily wear.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. It is carbon crystallised in the same structure, with the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same refractive index as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.

Does the centre stone come with a certificate?
Yes. An IGI certificate for the centre stone is included at no extra cost and states the carat weight, colour, clarity, measurements and laboratory grown origin.

How is this different from your other milgrain pave emerald cut rings?
Our other milgrain designs usually carry a single row of pave along the top of the band. This ring carries three rows on a ridged shoulder, each row separated by its own milgrain line, and it adds bezel set diamonds inside a scalloped gallery under the centre stone. It is a noticeably wider and more decorated ring.

What is milgrain and will it wear away?
Milgrain is a row of tiny raised beads along the edge of the metal. It is formed in solid metal rather than applied on top, so it wears very slowly. If it softens after many years of daily wear, a jeweller can sharpen it again.

Will a wedding band sit flush against this ring?
The shoulders are wide and ridged, so a straight band will meet it at the highest point. A curved or contoured band sits closest, and we can make one to match the milgrain style of this ring.

Which carat weight suits this setting?
All four are made for it. A 2 carat centre keeps the balance with the decorated shoulders. A 4 or 5 carat centre creates a strong contrast between one large clean step cut stone and the fine detail below it.

Is an emerald cut durable enough for everyday wear?
Yes. Its corners are cut at an angle rather than left as sharp points, and the four claws here sit directly over those corners for protection.

How do I clean a pave ring like this?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush is enough. Brush gently along the pave rows and behind the gallery where dust collects, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
