Seen from above this is a plain solitaire. An emerald cut lab grown diamond, four claws, a smooth domed band with no stones on it at all. The detail is underneath, where a hidden halo of pave diamonds circles the base of the centre stone and the shank splits into two curved arms that meet like the petals of a tulip.

Hidden halos work because of contrast. Nothing distracts from the step cut when you look straight down at the ring, but from the side there is a bright line of small diamonds under the stone, and the centre appears to float above them. It also lifts the stone slightly, which suits an emerald cut because more of its depth stays visible.

The split tulip gallery is the structural part of the design. Instead of a solid box under the diamond, the band divides into two tapering arms that rise, curve inward and support the head from both sides. The result is open, light and considerably less heavy on the finger than a closed basket, and it lets light reach the pavilion from beneath.

The band itself is domed, rounded on both the outside and the inside, and completely plain. That is a comfortable shape to wear all day and the easiest kind of band to resize.

Yellow gold, shown here, gives the strongest contrast between the warm plain band and the bright hidden halo. White gold and 925 sterling silver make the halo blend into the centre stone. Rose gold sits between the two.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.

Is a certificate included?
Yes. An IGI certificate for the centre stone is included at no extra cost and lists carat weight, colour, clarity, measurements and laboratory grown origin.

How is this different from your other hidden halo emerald cut rings?
Most of our hidden halo rings also carry pave along the band. This one keeps the band completely plain and adds a split tulip gallery, so the only diamonds besides the centre stone are the hidden halo itself. It is the quietest hidden halo design we make.

Can you see the hidden halo when the ring is worn?
Yes, from the side and at an angle. From directly above it is invisible, which is the whole intention. It is a detail for the wearer and for anyone who looks closely.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The band is plain and the setting is lifted above it, so a straight wedding band sits neatly against this ring on both sides.

What does the split tulip gallery do?
It supports the head from two sides while leaving the space beneath the stone open. That reduces weight, lets light in from below, and makes the ring easier to clean than a closed basket.

Which carat weight suits this ring?
All four are made for it. With no stones on the band, the centre diamond is the entire design, so larger weights look especially striking here.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the hidden halo where dust settles. The open gallery makes rinsing easy. Dry with a soft cloth.

About Mapple Gems

Mapple Gems is a jewellery workshop in Surat, India. A hidden halo has to be set on a curved surface that nobody sees straight on, and the split arms of a tulip gallery have to match each other exactly or the head sits crooked.
