An emerald cut laboratory grown diamond carried on a band that splits into two slim rails before it reaches the stone. The double shank frames the rectangle from both sides, widens the ring on the finger, and gives a step cut solitaire a structure that a single band cannot.

What a double shank does

A double shank, sometimes called a split shank, divides the band into two parallel rails as it approaches the head. Each rail is slimmer than a single band would be, but together they spread across more of the finger. The result looks lighter and more open while actually giving the head a wider, more stable base.

On an emerald cut that matters. A step cut is a long rectangle, and on a single slim band it can look like it is balanced on a stick. Two rails meeting the head at its long sides echo the parallel lines of the step facets, so the band and the stone share the same geometry.

The emerald cut

An emerald cut is a step cut. Long parallel facets run down from a wide open table, producing broad flashes of light and dark, often called the hall of mirrors, rather than the fine glitter of a brilliant. Because the table is so open, an emerald cut shows its own interior clearly, which is why the grade here is fixed at E colour and VVS2 clarity. The cropped corners also make it tougher than shapes with points.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. With two rails the band shows more metal than a single shank, so colour matters. Yellow gold makes the split read as a bold frame, white metal keeps it cool and architectural, and rose gold softens the lines. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The split is shaped by hand so both rails meet the head evenly for your particular carat weight, then the stone is set and the ring polished for your finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Brush through the gap between the two rails and under the head, where soap and hand cream collect. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Is a split shank weaker than a single band? No. The two rails rejoin into a single band below the split, and together they carry more metal at the head than one slim shank.

Does the gap catch on things? The rails are smoothly finished and close together, so in practice it snags no more than a plain band.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits alongside the lower shank. Because the split widens near the head, some people prefer a slim contour band.

Can it be resized? Yes. Resizing is done on the single lower section of the band, away from the split.
