A wide band with a row inside it

The two rails are the structure of the ring, not decoration added to it. They run the full circumference and the five stones sit down in the channel between them, so the diamonds finish at about the height of the metal. What you get is a substantial gold band with a line of diamond set into it, rather than stones raised above a shank.

Why ovals beside a cushion

Round side stones would leave gaps against a rectangular centre. Ovals, set with their length along the row, close against the cushion and against each other, so the five read as one continuous band of diamond. Graduating them twice on each side keeps the centre stone clearly the centre.

Built to be worn

Nothing stands proud of the rails. The ring does not snag, does not rock on the finger and does not need taking off to pull on a glove. For a five stone ring carrying this much diamond, that is unusual, and it is the reason to choose this construction over a conventional raised setting.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the weight of the rails, but every metal is made to order and priced above. A popular version uses yellow rails with white metal settings around the stones, as shown in the photographs; tell us if you would like it made that way. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. All four oval side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The rails are formed from one piece, the channel is cut to each of the five stones so they sit at matching depths, and the ovals are set in sequence so the graduation stays even. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, running the brush along both channels and between the stones. A low set row collects soap rather than losing it. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? All five stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The four ovals are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The rails are straight and level all the way round, so a plain band meets the ring with no gap.

Can it be resized? Within a size either way. A heavy double rail band is more work to resize than a thin shank, so please order your correct size and ask us for a free sizer.

Can I have this with round side stones instead? Yes, though ovals close the gaps better against a rectangular centre. We will show you both before making.
