An oval cut lab grown diamond set sideways across the finger on a band drawn to little more than a wire, held by four claws trimmed back to the smallest tips that will safely grip the stone. There is no basket, no halo and no pave. The ring is a diamond and a line.

There is a floor to how little metal a claw can be, and it is not arbitrary. A claw has to reach far enough over the crown to sit above the widest point of the stone, or the diamond can lift out under a knock, and it has to be thick enough at its base that it will not fatigue where it bends. Below those two limits a setting is not minimal, it is unsafe. What is shown here sits just above them, which is why the claws read as four small marks on the edge of the stone rather than as part of the design.

Band details

The shank is a fine round wire with a mirror polish, running unbroken from one side of the stone to the other with no rise into a head. Because there is no basket, the diamond sits as close to the finger as a claw setting allows, and the ring is almost flat in profile.

Metal options

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is shown here and a warm wire against a white stone is the whole contrast in the ring. Rose gold reads softer. White gold and sterling silver make the band nearly disappear, which pushes the floating effect further. For a shank this fine we recommend 14K or 18K gold rather than silver, which is softer and will bend more easily.

Frequently asked questions

How small can a claw safely be?
It has to reach above the widest point of the stone so the diamond cannot lift out, and it has to be thick enough at the base not to fatigue where it bends. These claws sit just above those limits, which is as minimal as a claw setting can responsibly go.

Is a wire band strong enough for daily wear?
In 10K, 14K and 18K gold, yes. Sterling silver is softer and a band this fine will distort more easily, so we recommend gold if the ring is never taken off.

Why set the oval east to west?
The stone spans the width of the finger rather than its length, which lets the setting sit lower and gives the ring a broad, modern line. It also means a straight wedding band meets the shank flush on both sides.

Does a thin band make the stone look bigger?
Noticeably. With almost no metal beside it the eye has nothing to measure the diamond against, so the same stone reads a size larger than it would on a wide shank.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, hardness, refractive index and fire as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment rather than pulled from the ground.

Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included with every order at no additional cost.

Can this ring be resized?
Yes, though on a wire shank we recommend confirming the size before we make it, since repeated adjustment is harder on a fine band than a heavy one.
