Turning a long stone east to west changes what the ring does to the hand. Set the conventional way, an emerald cut points along the finger and its length is read against the length of the finger, so the two compete and the stone tends to look narrow. Turned ninety degrees, the same stone spans the finger and the eye now reads its length against the finger's width, which is a much smaller measurement, so the diamond appears substantially wider than the identical stone set north to south. There is a practical consequence as well.
