Why jewellers mix metals

It is not decoration, it is optics. Any warm metal touching a colourless stone will bounce a little of its own colour into the diamond, and the parts that touch most are the claws. Making the head in a white alloy removes that entirely, so an E colour stone reads as cold and white as it actually is. The gold shank then gives you the warmth on the hand. You get both without compromising either.

The hidden halo

A row of small diamonds is set into the vertical wall of the basket, below the girdle of the cushion. From above you cannot see it at all and the stone keeps its own soft square outline. From the side it appears as a bright line under the diamond, lifting it clear of the shank so light reaches the pavilion from every direction.

About the cushion cut

A cushion is a square or slightly rectangular stone with rounded corners and gently curved sides, the shape of an old pillow. It is brilliant faceted, but with larger facets than a round, so it gives broader and slower flashes of light. People often describe the effect as candlelit rather than sharp.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Each variant is made in a single alloy as standard. If you would like the two tone combination shown in these photographs, a white head on a coloured shank, tell us in the order notes and we will make it that way at no extra cost. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A two tone ring is made as two components and joined, which takes longer than a single piece and is why we do not keep them in stock. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Turn the ring over and brush the hidden halo. If your head is rhodium plated white gold, expect to have it replated every year or two to keep it bright against the gold.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The halo stones are matched to the same grade.

Will the two metals wear differently? Slightly. The plated white head will need refreshing before the gold band shows any age, which is normal for every two tone ring.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Very nearly. The shank is straight and plain, so a slim band sits close beneath the halo.

Can it be resized? Yes. No stones are set in the shank, so it resizes easily.
