A band, not a setting on a band

Most three stone rings raise the diamonds on a head above a shank. Here the two rails are the structure: they run all the way round the finger, and the stones are suspended in the channel between them. The result is closer to a wide gold band with diamonds inside it than to a conventional engagement ring, and it is considerably more robust than anything raised on claws.

Weight you can feel

Rails this heavy take a real quantity of metal, especially in 18K. The ring has presence on the hand in a way slim settings do not, and it sits flat rather than rocking. If you have always found engagement rings too delicate, this is the answer to that.

Low enough to live with

Nothing stands proud. The tops of the stones are level with the tops of the rails, so the ring slides under a glove, does not catch on knitwear, and can be worn on the hand you actually use. That is unusual for a three stone ring at this carat weight.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the weight of the rails, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both round side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Both rails are formed from one piece of metal, the channel between them is cut to the measured stones so each sits at the right depth, and the three are set together so their tables finish level with the rails. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Run the brush along both channels beside the stones, where a low setting collects soap. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre cushion and both rounds are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The two rounds are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, unusually well. The rails are straight and the same height all the way round, so a plain band sits against the ring with no gap.

Can it be resized? Within a size either way. A heavy double rail band takes more work to resize than a thin shank, so please order your correct size and ask us for a free sizer if you are unsure.

Can I have a different centre shape? Yes. An emerald cut, a radiant or an oval all suit the channel. Tell us when you order.
