A solitaire first, a halo second

Most hidden halo rings add pave down the shoulders as well, which turns them into a busier ring than the name suggests. This one does not. The band is slim and bare from end to end, so the only diamonds on the ring are the centre stone and the ring of small stones under it. Seen from above, it reads as a plain cushion solitaire.

The slim band also changes proportion. A thin shank makes the centre stone look larger by contrast, which is the same trick jewellers have used on solitaires for a century. Put a 2 carat cushion on a fine band and it looks bolder than the same stone on a heavy one.

Why a cushion suits a hidden halo

A cushion is a square with rounded corners and a deep pavilion, so it stands taller in its setting than a flat spreading shape. That height is what leaves room for a collar of small diamonds underneath. The soft outline also lets the hidden halo run as one continuous curve rather than breaking at sharp corners, and the big facets of a cushion throw the broad, soft flashes people describe as a crushed ice look.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. On a slim band the metal colour carries a lot of the look. Yellow gold gives the classic warm solitaire, white metal lets the diamond read as the only colour on the hand, and rose gold softens both. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight, and it is the document an appraiser or insurer will ask to see.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. We build the collar to the girdle of your centre stone, set the hidden halo into it before the cushion goes in, then finish the ring by hand for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Brush around the collar from underneath, because the hidden halo faces the space where soap and hand cream collect. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The hidden halo stones are matched to the same grade.

Is a slim band strong enough for daily wear? Yes. It is solid metal throughout, not hollow, and a plain band has no set stones to loosen. It will show wear more slowly than a pave shank.

Does the hidden halo make the stone look bigger? No. It sits under the stone and changes the side view. The slim band is what makes the centre look bolder.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. Nothing projects at the level of the band, so a straight band sits right against it.

Can it be resized? Yes, freely. The shank is plain all the way round.
