What a cushion cut is

A square or slightly rectangular outline with rounded corners and gently curved sides, like a pillow. Its facets are larger and more open than a round brilliant's, which gives it a softer, slower glow rather than fast white flashes. It is the oldest brilliant style still in common use, and the corners are its practical advantage: rounded corners cannot chip the way a sharp square corner can.

The hidden halo

Small round diamonds circle the outside of the basket, below the girdle and facing outward. From above the cushion outline stays clean and uninterrupted. From the side the stone appears lifted on a band of light. On a cushion in particular this matters, because a visible halo tends to blur the soft corners that give the shape its character.

The wedding band

Round and marquise diamonds alternate along it, each in its own claws with metal showing between. It is a band with enough presence to wear alone on the other hand, and enough restraint to sit under a large cushion without fighting it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Both rings are made in the same metal. Yellow gold is photographed here, which suits the slightly antique character of a cushion cut. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the set at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent on both rings is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The hidden halo is built to the footprint of your individual cushion, and the wedding band is sized against the finished engagement ring so the two sit flush. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush upward into the basket to keep the hidden halo bright, then along the wedding band between the stones. Take them off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Does the price include both rings? Yes. Every price on this page is for the engagement ring and the diamond wedding band together.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. All accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The hidden halo and the band diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Can I wear the engagement ring on its own? Yes. It is a complete ring by itself, and the band is designed to work alone too.

Can it be resized? The engagement ring resizes easily since its shank is plain. The band carries stones part way round, so it will take about one size either way.
