The cushion cut

A cushion is a square with softly rounded corners and curved sides, like a pillow, which is where its name comes from. It descends from the old mine cuts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has larger facets than a round brilliant, so it throws broad, chunky flashes of fire rather than fine sparkle. It is one of the most romantic diamond shapes, and it never looks sharp or severe on the hand.

Why a halo suits a cushion

The halo follows the soft square outline of the cushion, adding roughly half a size to how large the centre stone looks. With close to three quarters of a carat of small diamonds across the halo and band, this is a ring built for maximum light: from any angle, the whole face of the ring sparkles.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White gold makes the halo and pave read as one continuous surface of light, while yellow and rose gold outline each small stone in warm colour. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is built around the exact outline of your cushion, the halo and pave are set by hand under a microscope, and the ring is finished for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush around the halo and along the band, where soap and lotion collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The halo and pave are matched to the same grade.

Does the halo make the cushion look bigger? Yes. A halo adds roughly half a size to the visible outline of the centre stone.

Cushion or round? A round sparkles more finely. A cushion gives bigger, bolder flashes and a softer, vintage outline.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits close alongside. For a completely flush fit, a slightly curved band works best with a halo.

Can it be resized? Within limits. A plain section at the base of the band allows adjustment.
